Visitors watch a short film at the Visitors Centre, take a free pass and walk about 1 km to a point where you see the Matrimandir from outside. The Visitors Centre has cafes and shops selling Auroville-made goods.

  6. Back at central Pondicherry

White Town's lanes are narrow and many are one-way, Mahatma Gandhi Road and the East Coast Road to Auroville are slow on weekend evenings, and the beach road is closed to vehicles from 18:00 to 07:30. Allow more time than the map shows, especially on Saturdays and Sundays. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Pondicherry?

Questions people ask

Is 2 days enough for Pondicherry?

Yes, for most people. It covers White Town, the ashram, Auroville and Paradise Beach without rushing. Add a third day for Villianur and Arikamedu, or for a slow day in White Town.

Which order should the two days go in?

Keep day one off a Monday, when the Puducherry Museum is closed. Day two works on any day. Swap them if you need to.

Why does day one finish at Paradise Beach?

Boats run from about 09:00 to 17:00, and the beach is best after the midday heat. Reaching it at about 13:50 leaves two and a half hours before the last boats.
