Pondicherry's main sights fit in one day by cab: the Manakula Vinayagar temple, the Aurobindo Ashram, Bharathi Park and the Puducherry Museum in the morning, then Auroville and the Matrimandir viewing point and Serenity Beach. A second day adds the churches, the Botanical Garden and Paradise Beach by boat. A third day goes to Villianur and Arikamedu. Walk the seafront Promenade in the evening, when it is closed to cars.

Each plan is a real route by cab, timed against opening hours.
Pondicherry's best known temple, to Ganesha, a few steps from the Aurobindo Ashram in the heart of the old town. It is older than French rule here, and the French are said to have tried more than once to close it. Inside, the walls are painted with Ganesha in his many forms, and a gold chariot comes out on festival days. Lakshmi, the temple elephant, gave blessings at the door until she died in 2024.
The ashram founded round the thinker and yogi Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, who shaped much of the town's spirit and later founded Auroville. Visitors walk through a quiet courtyard of trees and flowers to the Samadhi, the flower-covered tomb of both, where people sit in silence. The ashram owns many of the grey and white buildings in the streets around.
The green square at the heart of the French town, with the white Aayi Mandapam monument in the middle, built in the time of Napoleon III. Around it stand the Lieutenant Governor's house (the Raj Nivas), the legislative assembly and old colonial buildings. Shady paths make it a good break between sights.

A garden laid out by the French in 1826, with old trees from round the world, a small aquarium near the gate and a toy train for children on some days. Quiet and shady, a place to rest after the White Town streets.

Temples & the ashram
An old Vishnu temple in Mudaliarpet, south of the old town, said to go back more than a thousand years. Quieter than the town temples, with carved pillars and a tall tower over the gate.
A long, clean beach on a sandbar where the Chunnambar backwater meets the sea. You reach it by a short boat ride from the Chunnambar boat house, past mangroves and fishing boats. There are huts for shade and food stalls on the beach.
An old trading port on the river south of town, where Roman pottery, coins and glass beads were found, proof of trade with Rome about 2,000 years ago. Today there is little to see but the ruins of a French Jesuit mission house and the quiet river bank. Many finds are in the Puducherry Museum.
The town founded in 1968 by the Mother as a place where people from every country could live together. At its centre is the Matrimandir, a huge golden globe in a garden. Visitors watch a short film at the Visitors Centre, take a free pass and walk about 1 km to a point where you see the Matrimandir from outside. The Visitors Centre has cafes and shops selling Auroville-made goods.
A large Chola temple to Shiva in Villianur, west of town, with a tall tower and a big temple tank. Its huge wooden temple car is pulled through the streets at the yearly festival.

Questions people ask
How many days do you need for Pondicherry?+
One full day covers the Manakula Vinayagar temple, the Aurobindo Ashram, the museum and Auroville. Two days adds the churches and Paradise Beach. Three days adds Villianur, Arikamedu and slower days in White Town.
What are the Aurobindo Ashram timings?+
Visitors can go in from 08:00 to 11:30 and 14:00 to 18:00, every day. Entry is free. Silence is kept inside, photos are not allowed, and children under 3 are not let in.
How do I visit the Matrimandir in Auroville?+
Go to the Auroville Visitors Centre (09:00 to 17:00), watch the short film and take a free pass, then walk about 1 km or take the shuttle to the viewing point. Going inside to meditate needs an online booking on matrimandir.org 3 to 5 days ahead; it closes for maintenance for a few weeks most years in May and June.
What are the Paradise Beach boat timings?+
Boats leave the Chunnambar boat house from about 09:00 to 17:00, every 20 minutes or so, and cost about ₹300 to ₹350 a head return. Queues are long at weekends. Boats stop in rough sea and may not run in the monsoon.
When is the Promenade closed to vehicles?+
From 18:00 to 07:30 every day, so the seafront is for walking in the evening and at sunrise. The cab drops you anywhere in White Town, a few minutes away.
Can I swim at the Pondicherry beaches?+
Take care. The sea off the Promenade is rocks, and Serenity, Auroville and Paradise beaches have strong currents. Swimmers drown on this coast every year; paddle, or swim only where lifeguards are on duty.
Is Pondicherry worth visiting for its French heritage?+
Yes. White Town, between the canal and the sea, keeps its French street names, villas, churches and the Aayi Mandapam in Bharathi Park. It is best seen on foot, early morning or late afternoon.
What is the best time to visit Pondicherry?+
December to February, when days are warm and the sea is calm. April to June is hot and humid. October to December brings the north-east monsoon, with heavy rain and the odd cyclone that stops the Paradise Beach boats.
