Pondicherry's best known temple, to Ganesha, a few steps from the Aurobindo Ashram in the heart of the old town. It is older than French rule here, and the French are said to have tried more than once to close it. Inside, the walls are painted with Ganesha in his many forms, and a gold chariot comes out on festival days. Lakshmi, the temple elephant, gave blessings at the door until she died in 2024.

Temples & the ashramOpen 05:45 to 12:30 and 16:00 to 21:30 every day; closed in the afternoon. Free entry

Tip: Shoes come off outside, and shoulders and knees should be covered. The lane in front is closed to cars, so the cab stops a minute's walk away.

The ashram founded round the thinker and yogi Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, who shaped much of the town's spirit and later founded Auroville. Visitors walk through a quiet courtyard of trees and flowers to the Samadhi, the flower-covered tomb of both, where people sit in silence. The ashram owns many of the grey and white buildings in the streets around.

Temples & the ashramVisitors 08:00 to 11:30 and 14:00 to 18:00 every day. Free. Children under 3 are not allowed in

Tip: Silence is kept inside, and phones must be switched off. Photos are not allowed. Leave shoes at the counter by the door.

The green square at the heart of the French town, with the white Aayi Mandapam monument in the middle, built in the time of Napoleon III. Around it stand the Lieutenant Governor's house (the Raj Nivas), the legislative assembly and old colonial buildings. Shady paths make it a good break between sights.

French town, churches & museumsOpen about 07:00 to 20:00 every day. Free?

Tip: The Puducherry Museum is on the park's north-east corner, and the Promenade is one street east.

The town founded in 1968 by the Mother as a place where people from every country could live together. At its centre is the Matrimandir, a huge golden globe in a garden. Visitors watch a short film at the Visitors Centre, take a free pass and walk about 1 km to a point where you see the Matrimandir from outside. The Visitors Centre has cafes and shops selling Auroville-made goods.

AurovilleVisitors Centre 09:00 to 17:00 every day. Free passes for the Matrimandir viewing point 09:00 to 17:00 (older guides say Sunday mornings only). The inner chamber needs an online booking 3 to 5 days ahead

Tip: Going inside the Matrimandir to meditate needs a booking made in person a day or more ahead, and is not in these plans. The walk to the viewing point is flat but has little shade.

  7. Lunch, about 1 h. Your driver will know a place nearby. The times after this include it.

A long sandy beach 5 km north of the town, known for surf schools and beach cafes. It is wilder than the Promenade, with real sand to walk on.

Beaches & gardensOpen beach, free. Go in daylight?

Tip: Surf lessons are best booked in the morning, when the waves are smaller. Swimming is risky because of strong currents.

  9. Back at central Pondicherry

Drive times come from road routing without traffic. White Town's lanes are narrow and many are one-way, Mahatma Gandhi Road and the East Coast Road to Auroville are slow on weekend evenings, and the beach road is closed to vehicles from 18:00 to 07:30. Allow more time than the map shows, especially on Saturdays and Sundays. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Pondicherry?

Questions people ask

Is one day enough for Pondicherry?

For the highlights, yes: the old town in the morning and Auroville in the afternoon. Paradise Beach takes half a day on its own, so it needs a second day.

Can I see Paradise Beach and Auroville on the same day?

Only in a rush. The boat and the beach take two to three hours, and Auroville about two and a half. The 2-day plan gives each its own half day.

Can I go inside the Matrimandir on a day trip?

Not without planning. The inner chamber needs an online booking 3 to 5 days ahead, and visits are in the morning only. The plan visits the viewing point, which needs only a free pass on the day.
