What to see in Rishikesh

Ashrams and ghats on both banks of the Ganga, an evening river aarti, and a hill temple and waterfalls in the forest above. Two days covers the main sights.

Triveni Ghat evening aarti

The big bathing ghat in the old town, where priests wave brass lamps over the river at sunset. Get there 30 to 45 minutes early for a place on the steps.

Laxman Jhula and Tera Manzil

The old iron bridge is closed, but Bajrang Setu beside it is open to walkers, with glass walkways. Tera Manzil, the 13-storey temple at its east end, looks out over the river.

Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia)

The forest ashram where the Beatles stayed in 1968, with stone meditation huts and painted halls. A forest department ticket; open about 10:00 to 16:00. Allow 1.5 hours.

Parmarth Niketan

A large ashram on the east bank with a big Shiva statue at the river's edge. Its sunset aarti is the best known in town, at the same time as Triveni Ghat's, so pick one.

Neelkanth Mahadev Temple

A brightly painted Shiva temple in the hills, about 23 km up a narrow winding road. Go before noon. The road can close to cars in the July to August Kanwar season.

Neer Garh Waterfall

A waterfall in steps down a forest gorge, about 6 km from Muni ki Reti. A 1 km uphill path climbs past pools to the main fall; small forest ticket at the gate.
