Rishikesh in 2 days: what to see, in what order

Two days covers Rishikesh well. Day one is the town: Sivananda Ashram, Bharat Mandir, Laxman Jhula, the Beatles Ashram, Parmarth Niketan, Gita Bhawan and the Triveni Ghat aarti, about 41 km and back by about 18:30. Day two goes up to Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, then Patna and Neer Garh waterfalls, about 50 km and back by about 15:00. No stop closes on a weekday, so the days can go in either order.

Temples & ashramsOpen to visitors through the day, about 05:00 to 21:00 in listings; planned 06:00 to 20:00

Tip: Entry is free. Dress modestly, speak quietly and take your shoes off in the halls. Staying here needs written permission ahead of time.

  3. 2

    Bharat Mandir

    Temples & ashramsOpen 05:00 to 12:00 and 16:00 to 21:00

Tip: Entry is free. It closes from 12:00 to 16:00, so go in the morning or come back before the evening aarti.

  4. 3

    Laxman Jhula and Tera Manzil

    1 h here

Laxman Jhula is Rishikesh's famous old iron suspension bridge over the Ganga. It has been closed since 2022 because it is no longer safe, but Bajrang Setu, a new bridge with glass walkways right beside it, opened to walkers in 2026. Tera Manzil, the 13-storey Trayambakeshwar temple at the east end, has shrines on every floor and a view of the river from the top.

Bridges & the BeatlesTera Manzil about 06:00 to 19:00 (one listing says 20:00); the Bajrang Setu glass walkway 06:00 to 22:00

Tip: Tera Manzil has no lift, so the climb takes a while. The lanes round the bridge are full of cafes, so this is a good place for lunch. Hold on to food near the monkeys.

  5. Lunch, about 1 h. Your driver will know a place nearby. The times after this include it.
  6. 4

    Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia)

    1 h 30 min here

The old ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, where the Beatles stayed in 1968 and wrote many of their songs. It was left empty for years and the forest grew back. Now you walk among stone meditation huts shaped like domes and big halls covered in painted murals.

Bridges & the BeatlesAbout 10:00 to 16:00, last entry about 15:30 (one map listing says 08:00 to 18:00)

Tip: It is inside Rajaji Tiger Reserve and run by the forest department, with a paid ticket (higher for foreigners). Allow at least 1.5 hours; it is bigger than it looks. Wear walking shoes.

  7. 5

    Parmarth Niketan

    45 min here

A large ashram on the east bank in Swargashram, with gardens, temples and a big Shiva statue at the river's edge. Its evening Ganga aarti, held every day since 1997, is the best known in town.

Temples & ashramsOpen grounds in the day; evening aarti on its own ghat at sunset, about 17:30 in winter and 18:30 in summer?

Tip: Entry is free. Its aarti is at sunset, the same time as the one at Triveni Ghat, so pick one. Arrive 30 minutes early for a seat.

  8. 6

    Gita Bhawan

    30 min here

A large old ashram in Swargashram with painted walls showing scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. It also has a ghat on the river, a bookshop and an Ayurvedic shop.

    Temples & ashramsAbout 07:00 to 21:00; planned to 20:00

Tip: Entry is free. It is next to the east end of Ram Jhula, about 800 m from Parmarth Niketan along the river.

  9. 7

    Triveni Ghat evening aarti

    1 h 15 min here

The biggest bathing ghat in Rishikesh, on the Ganga in the old town. Every evening at sunset priests wave big brass lamps over the river while bells ring and people sing, and floating leaf boats with candles go out on the water.

Temples & ashramsGhat open all day; the evening aarti starts at sunset, about 17:30 in winter and 18:30 in summer. Planned from 16:45 to get a place on the steps

Tip: Get there 30 to 45 minutes early for a place on the steps. The aarti lasts about 45 minutes. Watch your bag in the crowd, and keep off the lower steps when the river is high.

  10. Back at Muni ki Reti
Day 2

Neelkanth Mahadev and two waterfalls

Up the forest road to Neelkanth Mahadev Temple early, before the queues. On the way back, the walk to Patna Waterfall, lunch, and Neer Garh Waterfall. About 50 km by cab, back by about 15:00.

  2. 1

    Neelkanth Mahadev Temple

    1 h 15 min here

A Shiva temple in the forested hills above Rishikesh, where Shiva is said to have drunk the poison that turned his throat blue. The tower is covered in bright painted figures, and a spring by the temple is used for a holy dip.

Temples & ashramsAbout 05:00 to 18:00 in most listings, and it may close for a few hours in the afternoon; planned 06:00 to 17:00, best before noon?

Tip: The road up is narrow and winding, about 23 km from Muni ki Reti. Queues are very long at Shivratri and in the July to August Kanwar season, when the road can close to cars.

  3. 2

    Patna Waterfall

    2 h here

A small waterfall in the forest above the Neelkanth road, reached by an easy walk of about 1.5 km. The water drops into a clear pool among limestone rocks, and there are small caves on the way.

Waterfalls & the riverNo listed hours; go in daylight?

Tip: The cab waits on the road. Allow about 2 hours there and back with time at the falls. It runs low in summer; September to November is best.

  4. Lunch, about 1 h. Your driver will know a place nearby. The times after this include it.
  5. 3

    Neer Garh Waterfall

    1 h 30 min here

A waterfall in steps down a forested gorge, about 6 km from Muni ki Reti off the Badrinath road. A path of about 1 km climbs from the gate past several pools to the main fall.

Waterfalls & the riverAbout 08:00 to 17:00 (listings give 17:00, 18:00 or sunset)

Tip: There is a small forest department ticket at the gate. The path is uphill and slippery when wet, so wear shoes with grip. Allow about 1.5 hours.

  6. Back at Muni ki Reti

Drive times come from road routing without traffic, which drives hill roads at plains speed. The lanes round Laxman Jhula and Swargashram are narrow and crowded, and the Neelkanth and Kunjapuri roads are steep and winding, so allow more time than shown. Weekends and the July to August Kanwar season bring long jams on the Haridwar and Neelkanth roads. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Rishikesh?

Questions people ask

Is 2 days enough for Rishikesh?

Yes, for the town and Neelkanth. Add a third day for the Kunjapuri sunrise and Vashishta Gufa, or a morning of rafting.

Which order should the two days go in?

Either. No stop closes on a weekday. Do the town day on the evening you most want to see the aarti.

How much walking is there on day two?

About 1.5 km each way to Patna Waterfall and about 1 km uphill to Neer Garh. Both paths are easy but slippery after rain, so wear shoes with grip.
