What to see in Haridwar

The great ghat and its evening aarti, two hill temples reached by ropeway, and ashrams and old temples in and around town. One full day covers the main sights.

Har Ki Pauri evening aarti

Haridwar's main ghat, where priests swing brass lamps over the Ganga at sunset, about 17:30 in winter and 19:00 in summer. Cars can't reach the ghat, so walk the last part and come an hour early.

Mansa Devi Temple (by ropeway)

A goddess temple on the hill right above Har Ki Pauri, about 2 minutes up by cable car. One combined ticket covers both ropeways. Go in the morning; weekend queues are long.

Chandi Devi Temple (by ropeway)

A temple on Neel Parvat across the river, built in 1929, reached by a 5 minute cable car over the forest. The ropeway stops at about 18:00, so don't leave it late.

Daksha Mahadev Temple, Kankhal

A Shiva temple in the old town of Kankhal, just south of Haridwar, with Sati Kund from the story of King Daksha. The ghat behind it is calmer than Har Ki Pauri.

Shantikunj

The big, quiet campus of the Gayatri Pariwar, about 6 km north on the Rishikesh road. People come to see the Akhand Deep, a lamp said to have burned since 1926. Entry is free.

Patanjali Yogpeeth

Baba Ramdev's huge yoga and Ayurveda campus on the Delhi highway, about 20 km from Har Ki Pauri, with a herbal garden and shops. It fits on the way in or out of town.
