What to see in Lansdowne
A lake, a viewpoint, temples on the hilltops and the old cantonment. One full day covers the town.
Tip-in-Top
The town's best viewpoint, on a ridge at the edge of the cantonment. On a clear day, October to February is best, you see a long line of snow peaks to the north.
Bhulla Tal
A small lake in a garden, looked after by the army, with paddle boats and a path round the water. A calm hour in the afternoon.
Bhairavgarhi Temple
A hilltop temple to Bhairav, about 18 km out at Kirtikhal on the Gumkhal road. The cab waits below while you walk about 2 km up a forest path.
Santoshi Mata Temple
A small temple on a hilltop at the edge of town, about 150 to 200 steps up from the Tip-in-Top side, with a view over the town.
Darwan Singh Museum
The Garhwal Rifles regimental museum, named after a soldier who won the Victoria Cross in 1914. Open about 09:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 18:00.
Tarkeshwar Mahadev
A Shiva temple in deodar forest, about 36 to 38 km from town by road, with a short walk down steps from the road. A good second-morning trip.

The way every cab goes. The Meerut Expressway, NH34 past Bijnor, then NH534 through Najibabad to Kotdwar. The climb starts after Kotdwar: 39 km of hill road that takes over an hour.

Kotdwar is the last town before the climb. Stop for lunch and the Siddhbali temple by the river, then do the hill road in daylight.
