One of the four holiest places for Hindus in India, built in the 1100s for Jagannath, a form of Krishna. The wooden gods are carried out each summer in the Rath Yatra, on three huge chariots down Grand Road. The temple kitchen feeds thousands every day.

TemplesAbout 05:30 to 22:30, with breaks for rituals that change each day; the longest is about 13:00 to 14:00. Only Hindus may enter. Free?

Tip: Only Hindus may go in. Phones, cameras, leather, bags and umbrellas are not allowed; leave them in the cab or at the free cloakroom by the Lion Gate (east gate). Non-Hindus can see the temple from the roof of the Raghunandan Library opposite, for a small fee.

A town on the Puri road where almost every shop sells appliqué: bright cloth shapes stitched onto a plain base, made into lamp shades, umbrellas, bags and wall hangings. The craft began as canopies for the chariots of the Puri Rath Yatra.

Crafts & marketsShops open about 09:00 to 20:00?

Tip: Shops sit on both sides of the highway; the cab can wait at any of them.

  8. Back at central Bhubaneswar

Drive times come from road routing without traffic. Old Town lanes are narrow and slow, and in Puri the police often stop cars short of the temple at busy times, so you may walk the last stretch of Grand Road. On the Konark and Puri day allow an hour more than the map shows. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Bhubaneswar?

Questions people ask

Is 2 days enough for Bhubaneswar, Konark and Puri?

Yes, for the main sights. Day one covers the city and day two Konark and Puri. Stay a night in Puri, or take a third day, if you want the beach at sunset or the Puri temple without a rush.

Which day of the week suits each day?

Keep day one off a Monday, when the Odisha State Museum is closed. The Konark and Puri day works on any day, so make it the Monday if your trip has one.

Is the Konark and Puri day too long?

It is a long day: about 160 km, and the map gives about 3 hours of driving. With traffic in Puri, plan to be back at about 17:00 or later. Ask for an outstation fare, not the 8 hour, 80 km city package.
