The biggest temple in Bhubaneswar, built about 1,000 years ago for Shiva. Its main tower is 55 metres tall, and the walled yard holds more than 100 smaller shrines. It is still a busy working temple, with priests, bells and pilgrims from dawn.

TemplesAbout 06:00 to 21:00; several listings give a midday break of about 12:30 to 15:30, so go in the morning. Only Hindus may go inside?

Tip: Only Hindus may go inside. Everyone else can look over the wall from a viewing platform on the north side. Phones and leather are not allowed in; leave them in the cab.

One of the oldest temples in town, from about the 600s. It is small and low, which is how the first Odisha temples looked before the towers grew tall. The walls are covered with carvings of gods, dancers and musicians.

TemplesAbout 06:30 to 19:30; one listing gives a break from 13:30 to 15:30. Free?

Tip: A few minutes from Mukteswar; see them one after the other.

A small temple from about 950 that people call the jewel of Odisha temples. Its stone gateway, an arch carved like a garland, is the best-known sight in Bhubaneswar. Siddheswar, a plainer temple, stands in the same yard, and Kedar Gouri is across the road.

TemplesAbout 06:30 to 19:30 every day. Free

Tip: Look for the carved monkeys and the stories from the Panchatantra on the walls. The Mukteswar dance festival is held here every January.

  5. 4

    Raja Rani Temple

    30 min here

A temple from about 1000 in a quiet lawn, made of a red and gold sandstone the locals call raja rani, which gave it its name. No god is worshipped here now, so you can walk right round it and look closely at the carved women, guardians and lions.

TemplesAbout 07:00 to 17:00 (listings give 06:00 to 19:30 at the widest). ASI ticket

Tip: It is the only old-town temple with a ticket (ASI). Buy it at the gate or online by QR code.

Tip: Closed on Mondays. The palm-leaf room is on the first floor.

Two rocky hills facing each other across the road, with rooms cut into the rock for Jain monks over 2,000 years ago. Rani Gumpha, the queen's cave, has two floors and long carved scenes. Hathi Gumpha has an inscription by King Kharavela, one of the oldest records of Odisha's history.

Caves & Ashoka's hillAbout 09:00 to 17:30 every day (listings give later closing). Udayagiri has an ASI ticket, bought online by QR code; Khandagiri is free

Tip: Udayagiri (the ticketed side) has the best caves; Khandagiri across the road has a Jain temple at the top. Watch your food and bags: monkeys grab them.

  8. Lunch, about 1 h. Your driver will know a place nearby. The times after this include it.
  9. 7

A white peace pagoda on the hill where, the story goes, the Kalinga war was fought about 2,260 years ago. Emperor Ashoka saw the dead on this field and turned to Buddhism. Below the hill, his orders are carved on a rock, with an elephant cut out of the stone above them.

Caves & Ashoka's hillAbout 07:00 to 19:00 (listings give 06:00 to 20:00 at the widest). Free

Tip: Stop at the rock edicts at the foot of the hill on the way up. A light and sound show runs here some evenings, not on Mondays.

  10. Back at central Bhubaneswar

Drive times come from road routing without traffic. Old Town lanes are narrow and slow, and in Puri the police often stop cars short of the temple at busy times, so you may walk the last stretch of Grand Road. On the Konark and Puri day allow an hour more than the map shows. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Bhubaneswar?

Questions people ask

Can you see Bhubaneswar in one day?

You can see the best of the city: the main Old Town temples, the State Museum, the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves and Dhauli. Konark and Puri are about 60 km away and need a day of their own.

Can I do Bhubaneswar, Konark and Puri in one day?

Only in a rush. Konark and Puri alone are about 160 km by cab and fill a day, so there is no time left for the Bhubaneswar temples. Take two days if you can.

Why start so early?

Lingaraj is busiest from mid-morning, and several listings say it closes from about 12:30 to 15:30. The Old Town temples are also cooler and quieter before 10:00.
