Then Tenneti Park just below it, and lunch. After lunch, an hour on Rushikonda Beach from about 13:50, then back down Beach Road to the INS Kursura submarine at about 15:05 and the TU-142 aircraft museum across the road. End on RK Beach at about 17:00 for the evening. About 35 km by cab, back by about 18:00. Not on a Monday, when the submarine museum is closed.

A park on a hill at the north end of Beach Road, with the best view in the city: the long curve of the coast, the beaches and the port. At the top are large white statues of Shiva and Parvati, gardens, viewpoints and a small toy train that runs round the hilltop. A glass skywalk sticks out from the hillside, and a ropeway runs up from the foot of the hill.

Hills, parks & cavesPark about 10:00 to 20:00, small entry ticket. The ropeway from the foot of the hill runs about 11:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 20:00 (one source). The glass skywalk and the toy train have their own tickets

Tip: The cab can drive to the top, or drop you at the ropeway at the foot of the hill and wait at the top. The skywalk lets people on in batches, so expect a short wait at weekends.

    Tenneti Park

Beaches & coastOpen-air park, open in daylight?

Tip: It is right below Kailasagiri, so pair the two. The rocks below are slippery; enjoy the view from the top.

  4. Lunch, about 1 h. Your driver will know a place nearby. The times after this include it.

    Rushikonda Beach

A wide, golden beach between green hills about 10 km north of the city, and the cleanest beach near Visakhapatnam. It holds the Blue Flag, an international label for clean, safe beaches. There are changing rooms, lifeguards and water sports such as jet skis and kayaks.

Beaches & coastOpen beach; lifeguards on duty about 06:00 to 20:00. A small beach entry fee may apply?

Tip: Swim only between the lifeguard flags: the sea has strong currents here, as along the whole coast. Water sports are run by private stalls on the beach.

  6. 4

    INS Kursura Submarine Museum

    Closed on Mondays
    INS Kursura Submarine Museum

A real Indian Navy submarine pulled up onto the sand of RK Beach. INS Kursura served from 1969 to 2001, including in the 1971 war, and became a museum in 2002. You walk through it end to end: the torpedo room, the control room, the bunks and the engines, with retired sailors on hand to explain. The Victory at Sea war memorial is just across Beach Road.

Ships & museumsOpen 14:00 to 20:30, closed on Mondays. About ₹40 adults, ₹20 children. Some listings add a Sunday morning slot

Tip: The passages and hatches are narrow and low, so it is a squeeze for some. Queues build in the evening; go soon after 14:00.

  7. 5

    TU-142 Aircraft Museum

A huge Russian-built Tupolev TU-142 that flew long sea patrols for the Indian Navy for about 29 years. You walk inside the plane, past the cockpit and the crew stations, and a sound and light show tells its story. Beside it, a newer museum shows a Sea Harrier jet from the Navy's old aircraft carriers.

Ships & museumsAbout 14:00 to 20:00 on weekdays, from 10:00 at weekends. About ₹70 adults, ₹40 children; the Sea Harrier museum next door has its own ticket. No photos inside the aircraft

Tip: It is opposite the Kursura submarine, so see both in one stop and leave the cab parked. Buy tickets for each museum at its own counter.

Ramakrishna Beach, the city's main beach, runs along Beach Road below the old town. In the evening the promenade fills with families, snack stalls and walkers, with the lights of the port to the south. The submarine museum, the Victory at Sea memorial and a small Kali temple are along the same stretch.

Beaches & coastOpen beach with a promenade; busiest in the evening?

Tip: The sea here has strong currents and swimming is not safe; paddle at the edge only. The cab can wait on Beach Road.

  9. Back at central Visakhapatnam
Day 2

Borra Caves and Araku Valley

Leave at 07:00 for the Borra Caves, about 98 km away up the Ananthagiri ghat road. The map says about 2 h 20 min; with the bends and a breakfast stop, plan on about 3 hours, which gets you there round 10:00, when the caves open. About 90 minutes in the caves, then on to Araku, about 39 km, for the Tribal Museum at about 12:40 and lunch in town. After lunch, the Coffee Museum next door, then the drive back down, about 120 km. About 257 km by cab. The map says back by about 17:25; with real hill speeds expect about 18:30 to 19:00. Works on any day.

Huge limestone caves in the Ananthagiri hills, among the largest in India, found by William King of the Geological Survey in 1807. Steps lead down into tall chambers full of stalactites and stalagmites, lit in colours, with a stream running through. Local people see a natural stone shape inside as a Shiva lingam, and there is a small shrine.

Hills, parks & cavesOpen 10:00 to 17:00, every day. About ₹60 adults, ₹45 children, camera extra

Tip: There are many steps down and back up, and the floor is wet in places: wear shoes with grip. The cab parks at the top of the cave road.

    Araku Tribal Museum

    Araku Tribal Museum

A museum in the middle of Araku about the hill tribes of the Eastern Ghats, who make up most of the valley's people. Life-size clay figures show their homes, farming, hunting, weddings and the Dhimsa dance, with their tools, jewellery and musical instruments. The garden around it has shops selling tribal crafts and Araku coffee.

Ships & museumsAbout 10:00 to 17:00, every day (some listings say 09:00 to 19:00). About ₹40 adults, ₹20 children

Tip: The coffee museum is a minute's walk away. Both are busy at weekends, so a weekday is calmer.

  4. Lunch, about 1 h. Your driver will know a place nearby. The times after this include it.
  5. 3

    Araku Coffee Museum

    30 min here

A small museum on how coffee came to the Araku hills and how it is grown and roasted here, mostly by tribal farmers. The best part is the café, with fresh Araku coffee and coffee chocolates.

Ships & museumsAbout 10:00 to 18:00 (some listings say 08:00 to 20:00). Small ticket; coffee and chocolate to buy?

Tip: Buy coffee here or at the stalls outside: it is the valley's best-known product.

  6. Back at central Visakhapatnam

Drive times come from road routing without traffic. Beach Road and the NH16 junctions are slow in the evening and at weekends, and the ghat road to Borra and Araku is narrow and winding, with lorries, so allow more time, most of all in the monsoon (June to September). Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Visakhapatnam?

Questions people ask

Is 2 days enough for Visakhapatnam?

Yes, for the city and Araku: one day for Kailasagiri, the beaches and the museums, one for the Borra Caves and Araku Valley. Add a third day for Simhachalam, the Buddhist sites and Bheemili.

Which order should the days go in?

Either, but not the city day on a Monday, when the submarine museum is closed: make Monday the Araku day, since the Borra Caves and the Araku museums open every day.

Can I go to Araku by train and come back by cab?

Yes, and many people do. The morning train from Visakhapatnam to Araku has glass-roofed vistadome coaches and runs through tunnels and over bridges in the hills. Book it well ahead. The cab then meets you in Araku and brings you back by way of the Borra Caves, which saves the drive up.
