A ride in a shikara, the painted wooden boat with a canopy, from one of the numbered ghats on Boulevard Road. In an hour you pass houseboats, floating gardens and the boat sellers of the lake. Longer rides reach the floating vegetable market and Char Chinar island.

Lakes & boatsIn daylight; best in the late afternoon. Fixed government rate per boat, about ₹700 to ₹800 for an hour (rate card at the ghat)?

Tip: The rate is per boat, not per person, and is set by the Tourism Department: check the board at the ghat before you get in. The floating vegetable market is at dawn, so it needs a separate early ride.

Day 2

Gulmarg: Drung Waterfall, the gondola and the meadow

Leave at 08:00 for Gulmarg, about 55 km west. Stop at Drung Waterfall below Tangmarg, then take the gondola from about 10:00, when it opens: Phase 1 to Kongdori and, weather allowing, Phase 2 to Apharwat. Lunch in Gulmarg at about 13:40, then the meadow and the Maharani Temple. About 120 km. The map gives 17:00 back in Srinagar; plan on 18:00, as the road up from Tangmarg is slow. Book the gondola online days ahead.

Tip: After heavy snow you may need a local taxi from Tangmarg for the last stretch.

One of the highest cable cars in the world. Phase 1 goes from Gulmarg up to Kongdori at about 3,000 m; Phase 2 continues to Apharwat at about 3,950 m, with snow on the top for much of the year and views to Nanga Parbat on a clear day.

Valleys & meadowsAbout 10:00 to 17:00 (16:00 in winter). Tickets online only, on the J&K Cable Car Corporation portal: Phase 1 about ₹700 to ₹810, Phase 2 about ₹900 to ₹1,010. Shut some weeks for maintenance

Tip: Book online days ahead in season: there are no tickets at the counter, and you need a Phase 1 ticket to buy Phase 2. Phase 2 shuts in bad weather.

Gulmarg's wide meadow, with the golf course, St Mary's Church and, on a small knoll in the middle, the Maharani Temple, a Shiva temple built in 1915 by the queen of Kashmir's Dogra ruler. It is the red-roofed temple seen in the song from the film Aap Ki Kasam.

Valleys & meadowsOpen in daylight. Free?

Tip: Ponies wait round the meadow. Fix the price and route before you get on.

  6. Back at Boulevard Road, Dal Lake

Drive times come from road routing without traffic. Srinagar's Boulevard Road and the old city are slow from about 10:00 to 12:00 and 16:00 to 19:00, and the Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam roads climb through towns and army checkpoints. Allow an hour or more extra on each valley day. During the Amarnath Yatra (about July and August) convoys slow the Pahalgam and Sonamarg roads, and in 2026 tourist cars were barred from the Gulmarg road after 17:00. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Srinagar?

Questions people ask

Is 2 days enough for Srinagar and Gulmarg?

Yes, for the main sights. Add a day each for Pahalgam and Sonamarg, which are in other directions.

How do I book the Gulmarg gondola?

Online only, on the J&K Cable Car Corporation portal: there are no tickets at the counter. Book days ahead in season. You need a Phase 1 ticket to buy Phase 2, and Phase 2 shuts in bad weather. In 2026 Phase 1 cost about ₹700 to ₹810 and Phase 2 about ₹900 to ₹1,010.

Can my cab drive up to Gulmarg in winter?

After heavy snow, only 4x4s or cars with chains may drive from Tangmarg to Gulmarg. Ask your operator; you may switch to a local cab at Tangmarg for the last 13 km.

Which day of the week suits each day?

Both days work on most days. Mosques are crowded at Friday midday prayers, and one listing says Pari Mahal closes on Fridays, so make Friday the Gulmarg day if you can.
