A ruined seven-terrace garden built in the 1650s by Dara Shikoh, a Mughal prince, as a school of astronomy. It sits high on the Zabarwan hills, with one of the best views over Dal Lake. The arches are lit up at night.

Mughal gardensAbout 10:00 to 17:00 in winter, 09:00 to 19:00 in summer; the entry gate shuts at 17:00. One listing says closed on Fridays. Small ticket?

Tip: The road up is narrow and climbs from Cheshma Shahi. One listing says it is closed on Fridays: ask your driver on a Friday.

The biggest Mughal garden in Kashmir, laid out in 1633 by Asif Khan, brother of Nur Jahan. Twelve terraces climb from the edge of Dal Lake to the hills, with a long water channel, fountains and old chinar trees.

Mughal gardensAbout 10:00 to 17:00 or 18:00 in winter, 09:00 to 19:00 in summer. Small ticket?

Tip: Walk to the top terrace: the view back over the lake to the Pir Panjal hills is the reason to come.

  6. Lunch, about 1 h. Your driver will know a place nearby. The times after this include it.

The Mughal emperor Jahangir built this garden in 1619 for his wife Nur Jahan. A water channel runs through four terraces past black stone pavilions and fountains, under huge chinar trees that turn red in autumn.

Mughal gardensNovember to March about 10:00 to 17:00; April to October 09:00 to 19:00. ₹24 for Indians, more for foreigners?

Tip: Autumn (late October to November) is when the chinar leaves turn red and gold.

A white marble mosque with a dome on the north shore of Dal Lake. It holds a relic believed to be a hair of the Prophet Muhammad, and is the most important shrine in Kashmir. The lawns by the water look across the lake to the hills.

Temples & shrinesVisitors about 09:30 to 17:30; the mosque is open longer for prayers. Very crowded at Friday midday prayers. Free

Tip: Dress modestly and cover your head. Women pray in a separate section. Avoid Friday around 13:00, when prayers fill the area.

    Shikara ride on Dal Lake

A ride in a shikara, the painted wooden boat with a canopy, from one of the numbered ghats on Boulevard Road. In an hour you pass houseboats, floating gardens and the boat sellers of the lake. Longer rides reach the floating vegetable market and Char Chinar island.

Lakes & boatsIn daylight; best in the late afternoon. Fixed government rate per boat, about ₹700 to ₹800 for an hour (rate card at the ghat)?

Tip: The rate is per boat, not per person, and is set by the Tourism Department: check the board at the ghat before you get in. The floating vegetable market is at dawn, so it needs a separate early ride.

  10. Back at Boulevard Road, Dal Lake

Drive times come from road routing without traffic. Srinagar's Boulevard Road and the old city are slow from about 10:00 to 12:00 and 16:00 to 19:00, and the Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam roads climb through towns and army checkpoints. Allow an hour or more extra on each valley day. During the Amarnath Yatra (about July and August) convoys slow the Pahalgam and Sonamarg roads, and in 2026 tourist cars were barred from the Gulmarg road after 17:00. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Srinagar?

Questions people ask

Can you see Srinagar in one day?

You can see the main city sights: Shankaracharya, the four Mughal gardens, Hazratbal and a shikara on Dal Lake. The old city (Jamia Masjid, Khanqah-e-Moula, Hari Parbat) needs another half day, and Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam each need a full day.

Can I take my phone up to Shankaracharya Temple?

No. Phones, cameras and smartwatches are not allowed past the security check at the foot of the steps. Leave them in the cab, and carry a photo ID.

Should I do Srinagar or Gulmarg with one day?

If you have never seen snow or want the gondola, choose Gulmarg. Srinagar's gardens and Dal Lake are easier, with short drives, and suit the day you arrive or leave.

When is the Tulip Garden open?

Only in spring, for about a month from mid March (16 March to about 16 April in 2026). In those weeks add it to this day: it is next to Cheshma Shahi.
