One of the highest road passes in India, about 5,360 m up, on the way from Leh to Pangong. The top has prayer flags, a small temple, an army tea point and snow for much of the year.

Lakes & high passesA road pass at about 5,360 m. Open most of the year; it closes for a day or more after heavy snow

Tip: Stay no more than 15 to 20 minutes at the top: the air is very thin. Walk slowly and drink water.

  3. 2

    Pangong Tso

A long, narrow salt-water lake at about 4,250 m, 134 km long, with about a third in India and the rest in Tibet. Its water changes from turquoise to deep blue as the light moves. The end scene of 3 Idiots was shot near Lukung.

Lakes & high passesOpen in daylight. Needs the Ladakh fee receipt (Indians) or a protected area permit (foreigners). Frozen from about mid January to mid March

Tip: It is about 150 km each way over Chang La, five hours or more each way. Many people stay a night at Spangmik instead of coming back the same day.

  4. Back at central Leh

Drive times come from road routing, which treats mountain roads like plains roads. Leh town is slow round the bazaar from about 10:00 to 13:00, the highways have army convoys and roadworks, and the climb over Chang La takes much longer than the map shows. Allow an extra hour on the Sham day and three hours or more on the Pangong day. Snow can close Chang La and Khardung La for a day or more, even in summer. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Leh?

Questions people ask

Is a Pangong day trip from Leh too long?

It is long: about 150 km each way and five hours or more each way over Chang La, for about 90 minutes at the lake. Many people stay a night at Spangmik or Lukung instead and come back the next morning.

Why is Pangong on the third day?

The Ladakh health advisory says spend at least 48 hours in Leh before crossing the high passes. With a rest day when you arrive, day three of this plan meets that.

Do I need a permit for Pangong?

Indians pay the environment and wildlife fee at lahdclehpermit.in and carry the receipt, with photocopies, for the checkposts near Durbuk and Tangtse. Foreigners need a protected area permit through a travel agent in Leh.

Is Pangong frozen in winter?

From about mid January to mid March the lake freezes over. Chang La can close for a day or more after snow, so keep a spare day in winter.
