A Sikh shrine on the Srinagar highway, about 25 km from Leh, looked after by the Indian Army. It honours Guru Nanak, who is said to have meditated here. A boulder inside carries what is believed to be the imprint of his back.

Along the IndusOpen 06:00 to 19:00 every day. Free; tea and langar from about 08:00

Tip: Cover your head and take off your shoes. The army serves free tea and langar, and you can eat lunch here.

A short stretch of the Srinagar highway where a car left in neutral seems to roll uphill. It is an optical illusion: the shape of the land hides a gentle downhill slope. A yellow sign and a painted box on the road mark the spot.

Along the IndusA stretch of open highway, any time in daylight. Free

Tip: Your driver can show you the trick in a few minutes. Watch for traffic: it is the main highway.

  8. 6

    Indus and Zanskar Sangam

    30 min here

The point near Nimmu where the Zanskar river meets the Indus. In summer the green-blue Indus and the muddy brown Zanskar run side by side for a while before they mix. In deep winter the Zanskar freezes into the Chadar ice trek.

Along the IndusA roadside viewpoint, any time in daylight. Free. Rafting from about June to September

Tip: The view is from the road above. In summer, rafting trips on the Zanskar end here; book in Leh the day before.

  9. 7

    Hall of Fame

A museum built by the Indian Army in memory of soldiers who died defending Ladakh. It covers the wars of 1947, 1962, 1971 and Kargil in 1999, life on the Siachen glacier, and Ladakh's people and wildlife. Captured weapons and a memorial wall stand outside.

Palaces & museumsAbout 09:00 to 12:30 and 15:00 to 18:00 (sources give a midday break of 12:30 to 14:30 or 13:00 to 15:00). Tickets stop about an hour before each close. About ₹225 for Indians, ₹400 for foreigners, with a camera fee; the ticket also covers the light and sound show at Zorawar Fort?

Tip: Plan on about an hour. Get there before 12:30 or after 15:00, when it closes for a long midday break.

  10. 8

    Shanti Stupa

    45 min here
    Shanti Stupa

A white dome on a hill above Changspa, built by Japanese and Ladakhi Buddhists and opened by the Dalai Lama in 1991. It holds relics of the Buddha. From the terrace you see Leh Palace, the town and the snow on the Stok range.

Monasteries & stupasOpen 05:00 to 21:00 every day. Free

Tip: A road goes almost to the top. If you would rather walk, about 500 steps climb from Changspa, but not on your first day at this height. The car park fills at sunset in summer.

  11. Back at central Leh

Drive times come from road routing, which treats mountain roads like plains roads. Leh town is slow round the bazaar from about 10:00 to 13:00, the highways have army convoys and roadworks, and the climb over Chang La takes much longer than the map shows. Allow an extra hour on the Sham day and three hours or more on the Pangong day. Snow can close Chang La and Khardung La for a day or more, even in summer. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Leh?

Questions people ask

Can I do this on the day I land in Leh?

No. Rest on the day you arrive: Leh is at about 3,500 m. Do this day on your second day or later.

Is one day enough for Leh?

It covers the best-known sights near Leh, but it is a long day. Hemis, Pangong Tso and the Sham monasteries each need another day, and Nubra needs a night away.

What can I drop to make the day shorter?

Skip Shey Palace and the Hall of Fame to save about two hours. Shanti Stupa is 4 km from central Leh, so you can also go up another evening.

Is Magnetic Hill real?

The car does seem to roll uphill, but it is an optical illusion: the road there slopes gently downhill, and the shape of the hills around hides it.
