The old summer palace of the kings of Ladakh, on a rock 15 km south of Leh. Its temple holds a copper and gold statue of the seated Buddha, two storeys high. Rows of white chortens run across the plain below.

Palaces & museumsAbout 07:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00. About ₹30. The Buddha hall is sometimes locked?

Tip: The hall is looked after by one lama; if it is locked, ask round the courtyard.

  7. Back at central Leh

Drive times come from road routing, which treats mountain roads like plains roads. Leh town is slow round the bazaar from about 10:00 to 13:00, the highways have army convoys and roadworks, and the climb over Chang La takes much longer than the map shows. Allow an extra hour on the Sham day and three hours or more on the Pangong day. Snow can close Chang La and Khardung La for a day or more, even in summer. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Leh?

Questions people ask

Is 2 days enough for Leh?

Two days covers the sights round Leh. Pangong Tso needs a third day, and Nubra a night away. Add a rest day when you arrive.

Which day should come first?

Either works: every stop opens every day. The town and west day starts in Leh, so it is easier if you still feel the height.

Can I see the morning prayer at Thiksey?

Yes. Prayers start at about 06:00, and visitors can sit quietly at the back. Leave Leh by 05:30, then carry on with the day as planned after breakfast.

Can I visit the Rancho school from 3 Idiots?

It is at Shey, 2 km from Shey Palace, but the school has limited tourist visits in the past. Ask your driver whether it is open to visitors that day before you stop.
