In the 1-day plan

Enchey Monastery

30 min
Monasteries & temples

A Buddhist monastery of the Nyingma order, about 3 km from MG Marg, set among tall pines. The prayer hall is painted inside with gods and guardians, and the masked Chaam dances are held here in winter.

A glasshouse of orchids, ferns and seasonal flowers on the Ridge, a few minutes above MG Marg. The Ridge Park outside is a quiet strip of garden with benches and old trees.

Day 1 of the 3-day plan

MG Marg

1 h

Gangtok's main street, closed to cars and kept very clean. It is lined with shops, cafes and momo places, with benches and flower beds down the middle. Most visitors stay near it.

Not in our plans. Add it if you have time.

Banjhakri Falls and Energy Park

1 h
Lakes & views

A landscaped park round a tall waterfall, about 8 km from town. Paths and footbridges cross the stream, and statues tell the story of the Banjhakri, the forest shaman of Sikkim's old beliefs.

In the 1-day plan

Namgyal Institute of Tibetology

1 h
Tibetan culture

A museum and research library in a traditional Sikkimese building at Deorali. It holds old Buddhist statues, thangka paintings, masks and rare manuscripts, and it is one of the best places in India to see Tibetan Buddhist art.

In the 1-day plan

Do Drul Chorten

Day 3 of the 3-day plan

Tsomgo (Changu) Lake

2 h

Questions people ask

How many days do you need for Gangtok sightseeing?

Two days covers the main sights: one day for the viewpoints, monasteries and ropeway in town, and one day for Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La and Baba Mandir. Add a third day for the zoo and Rumtek Monastery.

Do I need a permit for Tsomgo Lake?

Yes. Everyone needs one. A registered tour operator or the Sikkim Tourism office on MG Marg arranges it, ideally a day ahead. Bring an original photo ID (passport, voter ID or driving licence; Aadhaar is not accepted) and two passport photos. Children under 5 are not allowed.

Can foreign tourists visit Tsomgo Lake?

Yes, with a permit, in a group of at least two. Foreign nationals may not go past Tsomgo, so Baba Mandir and Nathu La are for Indian nationals only.

Who can go to Nathu La, and when?

Only Indian nationals, with a Nathu La permit on top of the Tsomgo one, booked a day ahead through a registered tour operator. It is open Wednesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Snow often shuts it from about December to March, so it is usually open from about April to November. If you cannot go, the cab goes from Tsomgo straight to Baba Mandir, or back to Gangtok.

Can my cab from Siliguri or Bagdogra do Gangtok sightseeing?

Usually not. Local sightseeing in Gangtok is done in Sikkim-registered taxis, and the Tsomgo trip needs a Sikkim permit taxi. Book the local days with a Gangtok operator.

Which Gangtok sights close on certain days?

The Himalayan Zoological Park closes on Thursdays. The Institute of Tibetology closes on Sundays, second Saturdays and Sikkim government holidays. The ropeway shuts for maintenance for a few weeks around late November to mid December.

Can a cab drive on MG Marg?

No. MG Marg is a walking street. The cab picks you up and drops you on Tibet Road, at the top end of MG Marg, or near your hotel.
