What to see in Jaipur

A hilltop palace, the old walled city with its palace and observatory, and forts on the ridge above. One full day covers the main sights.

Amber Fort

A hilltop palace above Maota Lake, built from the late 1500s, with the mirror-work Sheesh Mahal. Go early, before the heat. Cabs can take the back road up to the parking.

Hawa Mahal

The Palace of Winds: a pink, five-storey screen with 953 small windows. For the classic photo, go up to a rooftop cafe across the road.

City Palace

The royal palace in the walled city, still home to the old royal family, with four painted gateways for the seasons. Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal are a short walk away.

Jantar Mantar

An open-air observatory of giant stone instruments from the 1720s, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is little shade, so carry water.

Nahargarh Fort

A fort on the ridge right above the Pink City, with the best view over Jaipur. The terraces and cafes stay open into the evening.

Albert Hall Museum

Rajasthan's oldest museum, in Ram Niwas Garden, with armour, carpets, miniature paintings and an Egyptian mummy. Lit up after dark.

The drive: which way to go

There are two good roads. The expressway is faster; the old highway is shorter.

Usual

Delhi Mumbai Expressway

~295 km · about 5 h · via Sohna, then the Bandikui spur

Out of Delhi to Sohna, then the new expressway south and the spur road from Bandikui into Jaipur. More km than the old road, but few towns and little traffic.

Other

NH48 through Gurugram and Behror

~270 km · about 5.5 h · via Manesar, Behror & Shahpura

The old Delhi to Jaipur highway. Fewer km, but it runs through Gurugram and busy towns with heavy truck traffic, so it usually takes longer.
