Hills & day outOpen 06:00 to 18:00 every day; the gate opens at about sunrise, so the queue of cars builds from 05:30. Small entry and parking fees. The hill is sometimes shut at short notice for events

Tip: Leave by 04:40 to be at the gate when it opens. It is cold at dawn from November to February, so take a jacket. At weekends the top is very crowded by 09:00, and there is news of limits on private cars: check before you go.

Palaces & fortsThe fort walls and town are open all day; Tipu Sultan's birthplace memorial is about 08:00 to 18:00. Free?

Tip: Walk a stretch of the wall from the west gate, then drive the few minutes to Tipu's birthplace. The airport is 10 km away, so this is a good last stop before a flight.

  6. Back at MG Road

Drive times come from road routing without traffic. Bangalore traffic is among the worst in India, from about 08:30 to 11:00 and 17:00 to 21:00 on weekdays, and the Outer Ring Road and Old Airport Road are slow most of the day, so allow extra time on every leg. Cubbon Park's roads are closed to cars from 05:00 to 08:00 and on Sundays, so the cab stops on Kasturba Road. For Nandi Hills, leave by 04:40: the road north is empty then, and the hill fills up by mid-morning at weekends. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Bangalore?

Questions people ask

Which day should be the Nandi Hills day?

A weekday if you can: at weekends the hill road and the top are very crowded by 08:00. Keep day two off a Monday, when the art gallery is shut. One listing says the HAL Aerospace Museum on day one closes on Mondays too, so make the Nandi Hills day the Monday if you can.

What time should I leave for Nandi Hills?

By about 04:40. The drive is about 60 km and takes 1.5 hours before the traffic, and the gate opens at about 06:00, close to sunrise. From October to February the valleys below are often under cloud at dawn. Take a jacket: it is cold at the top.

Can the cab drive up Nandi Hills?

Usually yes, to the parking near the top, for a small fee. There has been news of limits on private cars on the hill road and of short closures for events, so check before you go.

Is day three outside the city cab box?

Yes. It is about 165 km, so book it as a day trip, not the 8 hour and 80 km city package. Devanahalli is 10 km from the airport, so this day also works as the last one before an afternoon flight.
