  • Distance 135 km
  • Drive time ~3h
  • Highway NH27

Road distance from Hazratganj in Lucknow to Hanuman Garhi in Ayodhya. From Lucknow airport it is about 155 km. The slow parts are getting out of Lucknow at Chinhat and the last few km into Ayodhya, where police often close Ram Path to cars, so allow up to 3.5 hours.

What to see in Ayodhya

The big temples sit within a kilometre of each other in Ramkot, the Saryu ghats are 2 to 3 km north, and the Nawabi tombs of Faizabad are 6 km west. One long day covers it.

Ram Mandir

The new pink sandstone temple on the spot believed to be Ram's birthplace, opened in January 2024. Phones, bags and smart watches are not allowed, and from the cab drop it is about 800 m on foot.

Hanuman Garhi

A fort-like temple to Hanuman up 76 steps in the middle of town. Many pilgrims come here first, before the Ram Mandir. Tuesdays and Saturdays are the busiest days.

Kanak Bhawan and Dashrath Mahal

A palace-temple said to be Kaikeyi's gift to Sita, with Ram's father's palace down the same lane. Both close in the middle of the day, about 11:00 to 16:30, so come early or late.

Tulsi Smarak Bhawan

A memorial to Tulsidas, who wrote the Ramcharitmanas, with a small museum and a Ramleela on stage at about 18:00. Closed on Mondays.

Gulab Bari and Bahu Begum's tomb, Faizabad

Two Nawabi tombs from when Faizabad was the capital of Awadh, before the Nawabs moved to Lucknow. Bahu Begum's tomb closes at about 16:00.

Saryu aarti at Naya Ghat

Lamps offered to the Saryu every evening around sunset: about 18:00 from November to March and 19:00 in summer. Get there 20 to 30 minutes early for a place on the steps.

The drive: which way to go

There is one usual road, NH27. The only choice is whether to start from the city or straight from the airport.

Usual

NH27 via Barabanki and Rudauli

~135 km · about 3 h · via Barabanki & Rudauli

Out of Lucknow past Chinhat, then the four-lane NH27 east through Barabanki, Rudauli and Sohawal into Ayodhya. It has two tolls, at Ahmadpur and Ronahi, and dhabas along the way.

Airport

Straight from Lucknow airport

~155 km · about 3.5 h · via Shaheed Path

The cab goes round the city on Shaheed Path and joins NH27 east of Lucknow, so you skip the old city traffic. It is 20 km longer than starting from Hazratganj.
