A row of ghats and a long water channel fed by the Saryu, with temples along both sides. In the evening the steps light up, and on Deepotsav, the night before Diwali, lakhs of oil lamps are lit here. Nageshwarnath, the town's old Shiva temple, stands at its head; it is said to have been built by Ram's son Kush.

The Saryu ghatsThe ghats are open all day. Nageshwarnath Temple about 05:00 to 20:00. Free?

The Saryu ghatsThe evening aarti on the Saryu starts around sunset: about 18:00 from November to March and about 19:00 from April to October, and lasts about 30 to 45 minutes. Free?

Tip: The aarti starts around sunset: about 18:00 from November to March and about 19:00 from April to October, so in summer the plan ends about an hour later. Agree the boat price before you get in.

  8. Back at central Ayodhya

Drive times come from road routing without traffic. Police often close Ram Path, Bhakti Path and the lanes round Ramkot to cars, especially on festival days, weekends and Ram Navami, so the cab may drop you at a parking lot and you walk or take an e-rickshaw or the e-cart shuttle. Allow more time than the map shows, and much more around Diwali (Deepotsav) and Ram Navami. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Ayodhya?

Questions people ask

Is 2 days enough for Ayodhya?

Yes. Two days cover every main sight at an easy pace, with time for a long Ram Mandir queue and a free afternoon. Add a half day for Bharat Kund or Guptar Ghat if you want more.

Which order should the two days go in?

Keep day one off a Monday, when Tulsi Smarak Bhawan is closed. Day two works on any day, so swap them if you need to.

What can I do on the free afternoon of day one?

Rest, then go back to Kanak Bhawan after 16:30 for the evening aarti and bhajans, or see the Ramleela at Tulsi Smarak Bhawan from about 18:00. Both are a few minutes' drive from the start point.
