Assi Ghat and a sunrise boat ride
1 h 45 minThe southern end of the ghats, where the small Assi river meets the Ganga. Every morning the Subah-e-Banaras programme starts here with an aarti, music and yoga on the steps. From Assi, rowing boats go north past about 80 ghats: Tulsi, Harishchandra with its cremation fires, Kedar with its striped steps, Dashashwamedh and Manikarnika. In winter the sun comes up from behind the empty sandbank on the far side.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple
2 hThe most important Shiva temple in Varanasi, one of the twelve jyotirlingas. The gold-plated spire and the small inner shrine date from the 1780s. Since 2021 the Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor links the temple straight down to the Ganga at Lalita Ghat, with wide stone courtyards where narrow lanes used to be.

Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat
1 h 30 minThe busiest ghat in Varanasi and the home of the city's great evening aarti. Young priests in matching robes stand on wooden platforms in a row and move big brass lamps, conches and incense in time to bells and chanting, facing the river. Thousands watch from the steps and from boats packed together on the water.

Manikarnika Ghat
30 minThe main cremation ghat of Varanasi, where fires burn day and night. Hindus believe that to be cremated here frees the soul from the cycle of rebirth, so bodies are brought from all over India. Stacks of wood line the steps above the fires.

Day 3 of the 3-day planQuestions people ask
How many days do you need for Varanasi?
One long day covers a sunrise boat ride, Kashi Vishwanath, Sankat Mochan, Durga Kund and Sarnath. Two days is better, with BHU, Namo Ghat and Ramnagar Fort and two evenings for the aarti. Three days adds Chunar Fort.
What are the Kashi Vishwanath temple timings?
Darshan is about 04:00 to 11:00, 12:20 to 19:00 and 20:30 to 21:00, every day. The gaps are for the bhog and evening aartis, and the early mangala aarti from 03:00 needs a ticket. Entry is free, with a paid quick darshan. Mondays and the month of Sawan are the busiest.
Can I take my phone into Kashi Vishwanath?
No. Phones, cameras, bags, smart watches and even pens are not allowed. Leave them in the cab or in the free lockers near the gates before you join the queue.
What time is the Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat?
Every evening at about 17:45 to 18:00 from October to March, and about 18:45 to 19:00 from April to September. It lasts about 45 minutes. Come 30 to 45 minutes early for a place on the steps, or watch from a boat.
How much is a sunrise boat ride in Varanasi?
A rowing boat is about ₹400 an hour for the whole boat, and a sunrise ride takes 1 to 1.5 hours. Agree the price and where you turn back before you get in. Prices go up a lot around Dev Deepawali in November.
Can a cab drive to the ghats?
Only to a few. Cabs reach Assi Ghat and Namo Ghat, but not Dashashwamedh, Manikarnika or the Kashi Vishwanath gates, which are reached on foot through narrow lanes. Police also close the roads round Godowlia and Maidagin to cars at busy times, so the cab drops you as close as it is allowed and you walk or take an e-rickshaw.
Where is the Kaal Bhairav temple?
In the old-city lanes of Vishweshwarganj, north of Kashi Vishwanath, where cars cannot go. Walk or take an e-rickshaw from Maidagin. It is open about 05:00 to 13:30 and 15:30 to 22:00 (the midday break varies), and is busiest on Sundays and Tuesdays.
Is Sarnath worth a visit from Varanasi?
Yes. It is about 10 km north of central Varanasi, about half an hour by cab. It is where the Buddha gave his first teaching, and the museum holds the Lion Capital of Ashoka, India's national emblem.
What is the best time to visit Varanasi?
October to March, when days are mild; winter mornings are foggy and cold on the river. Dev Deepawali, on the full moon of Kartik in November, lights up every ghat with lamps. April to June is very hot. In the monsoon, about July to September, the Ganga can rise over the ghats and boats may be stopped.
