What to see in Mysuru

A palace, a temple hill, Tipu Sultan's island fort and gardens with a fountain show at night. Two days covers the main sights.

Mysore Palace

The home of the Mysore kings, rebuilt between 1897 and 1912, with a coloured-glass wedding hall and a long painted Durbar Hall. Open 10:00 to 17:30. It is lit with about 100,000 bulbs on Sundays and public holidays from about 19:00.

Chamundi Hill

The Chamundeshwari temple on top of the hill, about 13 km from the city, with a giant stone Nandi bull halfway down. Go early: the temple closes from 14:00 to 15:30.

Brindavan Gardens, KRS

Terraced gardens below the KRS dam, about 20 km north. The musical fountain plays in the evening only, from about 18:30 or 19:00, so come in the late afternoon and stay.

Srirangapatna

Tipu Sultan's island fort town on the Kaveri, with the Ranganathaswamy temple, his painted summer palace at Daria Daulat Bagh (closed Fridays) and the Gumbaz, the family tomb.

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary

Small islands in the Kaveri where painted storks, spoonbills and pelicans nest. A boat takes you close to the nests and the crocodiles on the rocks. Busiest from about June to November.

Mysuru Zoo

One of India's oldest zoos, opened in 1892, with elephants, giraffes and big cats in wide enclosures. Open 08:30 to 17:30, closed on Tuesdays.

The drive: which way to go

NH766 through Wayanad and Bandipur is the usual way by day. At night the forest road is shut, and the long way round through Kodagu is the one that stays open.

Usual

NH766 through Wayanad and Bandipur

~215 km · about 5 h · via Thamarassery, Sulthan Bathery & Gundlupet

Up the Thamarassery ghat to Lakkidi, across Wayanad to Sulthan Bathery, then through the Muthanga and Bandipur forests to Gundlupet and Nanjangud. The forest road is closed from 21:00 to 06:00, so reach Gundlupet or the Kerala side well before 21:00. Do not stop or get out in the forest.

At night

Via Mananthavady, Kutta, Gonikoppal and Hunsur

~253 km · about 6.5 h · via the Kuttiady ghat & Kodagu

About 38 km longer, over the Kuttiady ghat to Mananthavady, then into Kodagu at Kutta and round by Gonikoppal and Hunsur. It is the way that stays open at night. Do not take the short cut from Kutta through Nagarhole park or the Bavali road to HD Kote: both forest gates close at about 18:00.

Common questions

How much is a cab from Calicut to Mysuru?

A one-way sedan costs ₹4,419 to ₹4,750 on Savaari and EaseMyTrip, and a 2-day round trip in a sedan costs ₹8,710 to ₹12,121 for the drive there and back. Check the date you travel, as prices move with demand.

What does an SUV or Innova cost from Calicut to Mysuru?

An Ertiga-type SUV one way costs ₹5,964 to ₹6,679. An Innova one way costs ₹9,334 to ₹9,822. Both seat 6 to 7 people with luggage.

How long is the drive from Calicut to Mysuru?

About 215 km and 5 hours on NH766. Allow up to 6 hours, as the Thamarassery ghat and the forest stretch are slow.

What is the Bandipur night traffic ban?

NH766 through the Bandipur Tiger Reserve is closed to cars from 21:00 to 06:00 to protect wildlife. Only a few state buses and emergency vehicles pass. Some reports give 20:30, so plan to clear the forest by about 20:00.

Can I drive from Calicut to Mysuru at night?

Yes, but not through Bandipur. The road via Mananthavady, Kutta, Gonikoppal and Hunsur stays open at night and is about 253 km, roughly 6.5 hours. The Nagarhole park road and the Bavali road close at about 18:00.

Can I stop in Wayanad on the way?

Yes. NH766 crosses Wayanad, so Lakkidi Viewpoint at the top of the ghat, Pookode Lake and Sulthan Bathery are all on the way. A night in Wayanad also makes the forest timing easy.

When is the best time to go?

October to February, when Mysuru is dry and mild. Dasara, in September or October, is the busiest time, with the palace lit every night. In the monsoon the Thamarassery ghat is slow and Wayanad can close its tourist spots on red-alert days.
