What to see in Wayanad
Caves, dams, lakes and waterfalls spread across the district. Two days covers the main sights.
Lakkidi Viewpoint
The top of the Thamarassery ghat, right on the drive up. From the railing you look down the nine hairpin bends to the plains. Watch your bags: the monkeys grab food.
Edakkal Caves
Two rock shelters high on Ambukuthi Mala, with carvings thousands of years old on the walls, reached by a steep climb of about 1 km. Open 09:00 to 16:00; closed on Mondays.
Banasura Sagar Dam
India's largest earth dam, about 20 km north-west of Kalpetta, where the flooded valleys left hilltops as islands. Speed boats run on the reservoir.
Pookode Lake
A natural lake in the forest near Vythiri, about 13 km south of Kalpetta, with a path right round it and pedal boats among the water lilies.
Soochipara Falls
A waterfall dropping about 200 m in three tiers through forest south of Meppadi, down a steep path of about 1.5 km. It shuts in heavy rain.
Kuruva Island
Forested river islands in the Kabini near Mananthavady, crossed by bamboo raft. Open only between the monsoons, roughly November or December to May, with a daily cap.
The drive: which way to go
The Thamarassery ghat is the usual way up. A second ghat to the north suits a stay near Mananthavady.

~74 km · about 2.5 h · via Thamarassery & Lakkidi
The main road into Wayanad. Stop at Lakkidi Viewpoint at the top of the hairpins, then Pookode Lake is a few minutes on, before Kalpetta.
The Kuttiady ghat to Mananthavady
~98 km · about 3 h · via Kuttiady
Up the coast and over the Kuttiady ghat straight to Mananthavady. Pick it if you are staying in the north, near Kuruva Island and the Pazhassi Raja Tomb, or if the Thamarassery ghat is blocked.
