The holiest gurdwara of the Sikhs: a gold-covered temple in the middle of a large pool, the Amrit Sarovar, reached by a marble causeway. Hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib are sung inside all day. Around the pool are the Akal Takht, the seat of Sikh authority, and the Central Sikh Museum. The langar, the free kitchen, serves a simple meal to tens of thousands of people a day, whoever they are, and you can sit on the floor and eat with everyone else.

Gurdwaras & templesThe complex and the langar are open day and night, every day. The sanctum opens at about 03:00 in winter (02:00 in summer) and the Guru Granth Sahib is carried back to the Akal Takht at about 21:45 in winter (about 22:45 in summer). Free

Tip: Cover your head (scarves are handed out free), leave shoes at the free shoe stand and wash your feet at the entrance. Photos are fine round the pool but not inside the temple. The cab drops at the Saragarhi parking; Heritage Street to the gate is on foot. The queue to go inside can take 1 to 2 hours at weekends.

The walled garden where, on 13 April 1919, British troops under General Dyer fired on a peaceful crowd with no warning, killing hundreds of people. The only way out was a narrow lane, now the entrance. You can still see bullet marks in the walls and the Martyrs' Well, where many jumped to escape. A tall red stone memorial stands in the middle, and galleries tell the story.

History & museumsAbout 06:30 to 19:00 (19:30 in one listing); winter hours may be shorter. Free

Tip: It is on Heritage Street, a few minutes' walk from the Golden Temple, so the cab does not move. Entry is free. Keep your voice down: it is a memorial.

A museum in the old red-brick Town Hall about the 1947 Partition of India, when Punjab was cut in two and millions of people crossed the new border. It tells the story through letters, suitcases, photos and the recorded voices of people who lived through it. Amritsar was the first big city on the Indian side, which is why the museum is here.

History & museumsOpen 10:00 to 18:00, closed on Mondays and on 26 January, 15 August and 2 October. Indians ₹10, foreigners ₹250

Tip: Closed on Mondays. Allow at least an hour; most people stay longer than they planned. It is next to the parking where the cab waits.

    Durgiana Temple

A Hindu temple to Lakshmi and Narayan, also called the Lakshmi Narayan or Silver Temple. Like the Golden Temple, it sits in the middle of a large tank and is reached by a bridge, and its domes are gilded. The silver doors carved with Hindu stories give it its other name. Near it are the Bada Hanuman temple and the Sita Mata temple.

Gurdwaras & templesAbout 06:00 to 22:00 every day. Free

Tip: About 1.5 km from the Golden Temple, near the railway station. Shoes off at the gate. It is calmer than the Golden Temple, a good place to rest.

  6. Lunch, about 1 h. Your driver will know a place nearby. The times after this include it.

Every evening Indian and Pakistani soldiers lower their flags at the border in a loud, high-kicking parade, with crowds cheering from stands on both sides. On the Indian side there is music and dancing before it starts. Since May 2025 the ceremony has been shorter: the gates stay shut and there is no handshake between the two sides.

The Wagah borderEvery day. From 16 October 2026 the ceremony is 17:00 to 17:30; in summer (from May) it moves to about 18:00. Get through security 1.5 to 2 hours before it starts. Free, no booking

Tip: No bags are allowed (phones and wallets in your pocket are fine), and there is no food inside. Carry a photo ID; foreigners need their passport and have a separate queue. Entry is free and there are no official VIP passes. The cab parks about 1 km from the stands.

  8. Back at central Amritsar

Drive times come from road routing without traffic. Heritage Street, from the Town Hall to the Golden Temple, is closed to cars, so the cab waits at the Saragarhi parking and you walk. The parking fills up at weekends and on Sikh festivals, and on Diwali (Bandi Chhor Divas) and big gurpurabs the roads near the temple can close to cars. After the Wagah ceremony, everyone leaves at once, so the drive back on GT Road can take an hour or more. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Amritsar?

Questions people ask

Can you see Amritsar in one day?

Yes, the main sights. The Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh and the Partition Museum are a few minutes' walk apart, and Wagah takes the afternoon. It is a long day of about 11 hours, with about 64 km in the cab.

Why go to the Golden Temple so early?

The queue to go inside is shortest in the morning, and the marble round the pool is still cool for bare feet. Jallianwala Bagh opens at 06:30 and the Partition Museum at 10:00, so the walk fits the opening times.

Why leave for Wagah so early?

The ceremony is at 17:00 from mid-October, but security queues are long and the gates can close an hour before. Leaving at about 14:15 puts you at the gate by 15:00. In summer the ceremony is at about 18:00, so you can leave an hour later.

What if my day is a Monday?

The Partition Museum is closed on Mondays. Spend the time at the Golden Temple's Central Sikh Museum or walk Hall Bazaar instead; the rest of the day is open every day.
