The only temple in India where Ram is worshipped as a king. The story goes that Queen Ganesh Kunwari brought the idol from Ayodhya, and it would not move from her palace, so the palace became the temple. Police give the king a gun salute at the aarti. Phool Bagh, the garden next door, has the Sawan Bhadon towers and Palki Mahal.

TemplesMorning darshan about 09:00 to 13:00 from November to February and 08:00 to 12:30 from March to October; evening darshan about 19:00 to 21:30 in winter and 20:00 to 22:30 in summer. Closed in between

Tip: Phones, cameras and leather (belts, wallets) are not allowed inside; leave them in the cab or at a shop locker. Entry is free. The doors shut from about 12:30 till the evening, so come in the morning.

    Chaturbhuj Temple

A huge temple on a high stone platform, built for the Ram idol that never moved in. Inside it is tall and almost empty, like a cathedral, with lotus carvings on the ceiling. Its spires are the tallest thing in Orchha.

TemplesAbout 09:00 to 17:00 every day; some listings give a midday closure, so the morning is safest

Tip: Climb the narrow stairs to the roof for the view over Ram Raja, the palaces and the river. It is on the one Orchha monument ticket from the fort.

Orchha Fort: Raja Mahal and Jahangir Mahal

    2 h 30 min here

The fort sits on an island in the Betwa, reached by an old stone bridge. Raja Mahal, the king's palace, has rooms painted with gods, hunts and court scenes. Jahangir Mahal next door was built by Bir Singh Deo for a visit by the Mughal emperor Jahangir: three floors of domes, balconies and blue tiles round a courtyard, with views from the top over the whole town.

Palaces & fortsAbout 09:00 to 17:00 every day (officially sunrise to sunset)

Tip: Buy the Orchha ticket at the counter here: one ticket covers the palaces, Rai Praveen Mahal, the Chhatris, Chaturbhuj and Laxmi Narayan, on the same day. Jahangir Mahal has a small museum on the ground floor.

  5. Lunch, about 1 h. Your driver will know a place nearby. The times after this include it.

A small two-storey palace in a garden, built for Rai Praveen, a poet and singer at the Orchha court. When the emperor Akbar called her to Delhi, she talked her way back home with a poem. Inside are faded paintings of her and of dancers.

A temple built like a fort on a hill west of town, with no idol inside. People come for the wall paintings: the Ramayana, Krishna's life, and scenes from 1857, including the Rani of Jhansi fighting the British. From the walls you see Orchha's spires and palaces across the fields.

TemplesAbout 09:00 to 17:00 every day

Tip: On the Orchha monument ticket. Look up: the best paintings are on the ceilings of the corner rooms.

Fourteen tall memorials to the Bundela kings on Kanchan Ghat, by the Betwa. The biggest is Bir Singh Deo's. Vultures nest on the domes, and from the far bank or the bridge the row of spires over the river is the picture of Orchha.

Palaces & fortsAbout 09:00 to 17:00 inside the garden; the riverbank outside is open all day?

Tip: On the Orchha monument ticket. After the garden closes, walk across the road bridge or down to the ghat for the sunset view.

  8. Back at Orchha town

Drive times come from road routing without traffic. Orchha itself is small and every stop is a few minutes apart, but the road to Datia and the old city lanes of Jhansi are slow. Allow more time than the map shows. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Orchha?

Questions people ask

Is 2 days enough for Orchha?

Yes. Day one covers every sight in town, and day two adds Datia and Jhansi, the two places the Orchha kings and the Rani of Jhansi are tied to.

Which day of the week suits day two?

Not Monday: Rani Mahal and the Jhansi museum are closed, and one listing says the fort is too. One listing says Datia Palace closes on Sundays, so Tuesday to Saturday is safest. Day one works on any day.

Is day two a long drive?

About 98 km in all: 47 km out to Datia, 30 km to Jhansi and 18 km back to Orchha. The map gives about two hours of driving; allow three with Jhansi traffic.
