The home and office of Sir George Everest, the surveyor the world's highest mountain is named after. He lived here from 1832 to 1843 while mapping India. The old stone house stands on a grassy ridge called Park Estate, about 6 km west of Library Chowk. The ridge has wide views of the Doon Valley on one side and the snow peaks on the other.

Heritage & museumsAbout 09:00 to 18:00; entry and parking fees at the Park Estate gate

Tip: The last stretch is a narrow, steep road. A short walk up the ridge behind the house takes you to the George Everest Peak viewpoint. The house was restored in 2023; some listings say its rooms stay shut, so go for the ridge and the view.

A big flower garden about 3 km west of Library Chowk, first laid out in the 1800s as a botanical garden. Today it has flower beds, a small lake with paddle boats, a little waterfall and food and toy stalls. It is the most family-friendly stop in Mussoorie.

Falls, gardens & viewpointsAbout 09:00 to 19:30 (some listings say 20:00); small entry fee

Tip: It gets crowded on weekends from about noon. Boats and the small rides cost extra.

A waterfall about 13 km northwest of Mussoorie on the Chakrata road, where a stream drops into a pool in a deep valley. You can bathe in the pool. Around it are steps, cafés, shops and a short ropeway down to the water.

Falls, gardens & viewpointsAbout 10:00 to 18:00; no entry fee, small charges for the ropeway, lockers and parking

Tip: Steps lead down from the road, and the ropeway saves the climb back. Take a change of clothes if you plan to get in. On summer weekends the road jams, so go early or on a weekday.

A small man-made lake about 6 km from Mussoorie on the road down to Dehradun. You can take a paddle boat on the water. The real draw is the view: the Doon Valley spreads out below, with Dehradun's lights after dark.

Cafés, markets & ropewaysAbout 08:00 to 18:00 (one listing says 19:00); about ₹15 entry, boats extra?

Tip: It is small and takes under an hour. It is easy to stop here on the way to or from Dehradun.

A narrow limestone gorge on the edge of Dehradun with a cold stream running through it. You walk up the stream in ankle-deep water between high rock walls, to a spot where the water comes out of the rock. It is called Robber's Cave from a story that thieves once hid here.

    Falls, gardens & viewpointsAbout 07:00 to 18:00; about ₹25 to ₹40 entry

Heritage & museumsMuseums about 09:00 to 17:30, last entry 17:00; closed on national holidays; small entry fee

Tip: Cars can drive into the campus to the main building. The museums take about an hour; save time to walk round the front lawns.

    Sahastradhara

    1 h 15 min here
    Sahastradhara

Sahastradhara means "thousand-fold spring": water drips from limestone caves and ledges by a river about 14 km from Dehradun. The water has sulphur in it, and people bathe in the pools. A ropeway goes up the hill to a small park with views.

Falls, gardens & viewpointsAbout 09:30 to 18:00 (one guide says 08:00 to 19:00); ropeway extra?

Tip: It gets very crowded on weekends. The pools are shallow; carry a towel if you want to dip your feet.

  7. Back at Library Chowk, Mussoorie

Drive times come from road routing without traffic. Mussoorie's roads are narrow and steep, the Kempty and Dehradun roads jam on summer weekends and holidays, and the climb from Dehradun is slower than the map shows. Allow an hour more on the Dhanaulti and Dehradun days. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

Questions people ask

Is the Dehradun day worth it?

Yes, if you want a change from viewpoints: a walk up a stream in Robber's Cave, a grand old building and its museums at FRI, and sulphur springs at Sahastradhara. It is a long drive down and back, so it works best as your last day.

Can I end the trip in Dehradun?

Yes. Pack the cab on the morning of day three and get dropped at Dehradun's railway station or Jolly Grant airport after Sahastradhara instead of going back up the hill.

What if day three falls on a holiday?

The Forest Research Institute's museums close on national holidays. Swap it for Tapkeshwar Temple, a cave temple to Shiva about 4 km away.
