Osian, about 65 km north of Jodhpur, was a rich trading town 1,200 years ago, and its 8th to 11th century temples are some of the oldest in Rajasthan. The Mahavira Jain temple, from about 783, has a carved gateway, a pillared hall and an image of Mahavira. Close by are the small Surya and Harihara temples, covered in carvings of gods and dancers.

TemplesThe Osian temples are given as about 07:00 to 17:00. The Mahavira temple has no published hours; the old Hindu temples around it are open ruins with no ticket?

Tip: No leather inside the Jain temple. Lunch in Osian is simple, at the small eateries in the town.

    Mandore Garden

Mandore was the capital of Marwar before Jodhpur, about 9 km north of the city. The garden holds the tall red sandstone cenotaphs, called devals, of the Rathore rulers, built like temples. The Hall of Heroes has big painted figures of gods and folk heroes carved out of one rock wall, and a small museum sits in the old palace. Langur monkeys live in the trees.

Lakes, gardens & the desertThe garden is open every day in daylight and free. The State Museum inside is open 09:45 to 17:15 (₹20 for Indians, ₹100 for foreigners); one source says it is closed on Mondays

Tip: Keep food out of sight: the monkeys grab it. The ruins of the old Mandore fort are up the hill behind the cenotaphs, a short climb.

  6. Back at central Jodhpur

Drive times come from road routing without traffic. The old city's lanes round the clock tower are narrow and crowded, so the cab waits by Sardar Market and you walk in. The road up to Mehrangarh is slow when the tour buses arrive at about 10:00. On the Osian day, plan on about 30 minutes more each way than the map shows. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Jodhpur?

Questions people ask

Which days should I avoid?

Keep day two off a Tuesday, when Machia Biological Park is closed. Days one and three work on any day, so move them round a Tuesday.

Is the Osian day too long?

No. It is about 123 km and 8 hours. The map gives about 2.5 hours of driving; plan on 3. It goes over the 80 km of a city day, so ask for an outstation fare.

Can I add a camel ride on the dunes at Osian?

Yes, but it changes the day. The camel rides are at sunset at the camps outside Osian, so leave Jodhpur at about 14:00, see the temples, ride at sunset and get back at about 20:00 to 22:00. Do Mandore on another day.
