A rainwater lake dug in 1367 by Rawal Gadsi Singh, which once gave the whole town its water. Small temples and chhatris (domed pavilions) stand on the banks and in the water, and you walk in through Tilon ki Pol, a carved gate said to have been built by a court dancer.

Lakes & dunesThe lake is open in daylight and free. Boats for hire about 08:00 to 20:00 (one listing says 07:00 to 19:00)

Tip: Hire a pedal boat to get close to the pavilions in the water. Catfish crowd the steps when people feed them.

Sonar Qila, the Golden Fort, was built from 1156 by Rawal Jaisal on Trikuta hill, and the yellow sandstone glows gold in the low sun. Thousands of people still live inside its walls, among lanes of shops, cafes and homes. The Fort Palace Museum, the old royal palace, has seven floors of rooms, carved balconies and views over the desert. Seven Jain temples from the 12th to the 15th century are a few lanes away, covered in fine stone carving.

Forts, havelis & cenotaphsThe fort is a living town and its gates never close. The Fort Palace Museum is open 09:00 to 18:00 every day. The Jain temples let visitors in only 08:00 to 12:00

Tip: Do the Jain temples first or straight after the palace: they close to visitors at 12:00. Take off shoes and leather at the temples and cover your knees and shoulders. The audio guide at the palace is worth it.

  4. 3

    Patwon ki Haveli

Five mansions in a row, built from 1805 by the trader Guman Chand Patwa for his five sons. Their fronts are covered in carved yellow sandstone, with tiny balconies and screens like lace. Kothari's Patwa Haveli, the first, is a museum of rooms set up as they were, with painted ceilings, mirror work, brass pots and old clothes.

Forts, havelis & cenotaphsOpen 09:00 to 17:00 every day (other listings say 17:30 or 18:00). Ticket for the museum haveli, camera extra

Tip: Nathmal ki Haveli and Salim Singh ki Haveli are both a few minutes away on foot, so see all three before you go back to the cab.

  5. Lunch, about 1 h. Your driver will know a place nearby. The times after this include it.

The royal cenotaphs of Jaisalmer's rulers, a garden of carved chhatris on a low ridge about 6 km north of town, started by Maharawal Jai Singh II in the early 1700s. Wind turbines now line the ridge behind them, an odd and striking picture.

Forts, havelis & cenotaphsAbout 08:00 to 18:00 (one listing says 06:00 to 18:30). Ticket; prices vary a lot between listings, so ask at the gate

A hillside of golden sandstone chhatris, memorials of the town's Brahmin families, named after the sage Ved Vyas. It looks straight across at the fort, which is why it is Jaisalmer's favourite sunset spot.

Forts, havelis & cenotaphsAbout 08:00 to 19:30. Small ticket or free, by listing?

Tip: Folk musicians often play here in the evening. It is about 1 km from the centre, so you can go back on your own for sunset.

Day 2

Amar Sagar, Lodurva, Kuldhara, Khaba Fort and the Sam dunes

Amar Sagar at about 09:10 and the Lodurva Jain temple at about 10:10, before both close at about 11:30. Kuldhara at about 11:35 and lunch, then Khaba Fort at about 14:10. A lake and garden named after Maharawal Amar Singh, who ruled Jaisalmer in the late 1600s, with a small palace on the bank and steps down to the water. The Jain temple beside it is carved as finely as the old ones in the fort. The lake is often dry outside the monsoon.

Jain templesThe temple is open about 05:30 to 11:30 and 17:30 to 20:30, free; the lake and garden in daylight?

Tip: Go in the morning: the temple shuts from about 11:30 to 17:30. It is on the way to Lodurva, so take both on the same drive.

Lodurva was the capital of the Bhati rulers before Jaisalmer was built in 1156. Little of the old town is left, but the Jain temple to Parshvanath was rebuilt in the 17th century, with a carved stone arch at the gate and a metal tree of life (kalpavriksha) inside.

Jain templesAbout 05:30 to 11:30 and 17:30 to 20:30. Small camera fee?

Tip: Get there in the morning: it shuts from about 11:30 to 17:30.

    Kuldhara abandoned village

    Kuldhara abandoned village

A Paliwal Brahmin village that was left empty, the story goes, in a single night in the early 1800s, with a curse that no one would ever live there again. Rows of roofless stone houses, a temple and the old lanes are still standing, and a few houses have been rebuilt to show how people lived.

Forts, havelis & cenotaphsOpen 08:00 to 18:00 every day; you must leave by sunset. Small ticket per person and per car

Tip: It is open ground with no shade. Read the boards by the gate before you walk in; they tell the story better than the guides.

  5. Lunch, about 1 h. Your driver will know a place nearby. The times after this include it.
  6. 4

    Khaba Fort

Another Paliwal village left empty with Kuldhara, but bigger and wilder, below a small fort on a hill. From the fort you look over hundreds of ruined houses, and a room inside shows fossils found nearby. Peacocks gather here in the evening.

Forts, havelis & cenotaphsAbout 09:00 to 18:00 in two listings and 10:00 to 17:00 in one; plan inside 10:00 to 17:00. Ticket

Tip: The climb to the fort is short but rough; wear shoes, not sandals.

  7. 5

    Sam Sand Dunes

    Sam Sand Dunes
Photo: Dinesh Valke from Thane, India, CC BY-SA 2.0

The best-known dunes of the Thar desert, about 45 km west of Jaisalmer near the edge of the Desert National Park. People come for a camel or jeep ride over the sand at sunset, and the tent camps along the road put on folk music and dance in the evening.

Lakes & dunesOpen desert, no entry ticket. Camel and jeep rides are paid on the spot; a self-arranged camel ride is about ₹300 for an hour at sunset

Tip: Agree the camel or jeep price and the time before you get on, and ask to go past the first crowded dunes. Take a scarf for the wind and sand.

  8. Back at central Jaisalmer

Drive times come from road routing without traffic. Cars cannot go inside the fort or into the lanes round the havelis, so the cab waits at Gopa Chowk below the fort gate and you walk. The desert roads to Kuldhara, Khaba and Sam are empty and fast, but the drive back from the dunes is after dark. From April to September it is very hot by late morning; October to March is the best time. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Jaisalmer?

Questions people ask

Is 2 days enough for Jaisalmer?

Yes. Two days covers the fort, the havelis, Gadisar Lake, Bada Bagh, Lodurva, Kuldhara, Khaba Fort and the Sam dunes at an easy pace. A third day adds the War Museum and a slower start.

Does it matter which day I do first?

No sight on either day closes on a weekday, so the days can go in either order. Day one starts early for the cool morning at the lake and the fort's Jain temples, which close to visitors at 12:00.

Why is day two so long?

The sights west of Jaisalmer are spread out, and the dunes are about 45 km away. The day starts at 09:00 for the Jain temples at Amar Sagar and Lodurva, which close at about 11:30, and ends after sunset at Sam, back by about 19:00.

Can I stay the night at the Sam dunes?

Yes. Many tent camps along the road to Sam have dinner, folk music and dance, and a bed. Then the cab drops you at the camp on day two and picks you up the next morning.
