Tip: Allow two hours; the houses are spread out and shaded. Closed on Tuesdays.

  8. Back at central Chennai

Drive times come from road routing without traffic. Chennai traffic is heavy, worst from about 08:00 to 11:00 and 17:00 to 21:00 on weekdays, so allow extra time in town. For Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram, leave early: the drive out of the city is much quicker before 08:00. The streets round the big temples are crowded, so the cab drops you a short walk away. Opening hours marked ? are not yet confirmed, so check them before you go.

More or less time in Chennai?

Questions people ask

Is 2 days enough for Chennai?

Yes, for the main sights. One day covers the city and one covers Mahabalipuram. Add a third day for Kanchipuram if you like temples.

Which order should the two days go in?

Either order works. The city day must not be a Friday, when the Fort Museum and the Government Museum are closed, and the Mahabalipuram day must not be a Tuesday, when DakshinaChitra is closed.

Can I add the Crocodile Bank to the Mahabalipuram day?

Only if you drop something: with it the day runs over 11 hours. Swap it for DakshinaChitra on the way back, or for the Tiger Cave. It is closed on Mondays.

Is one ticket enough for Mahabalipuram?

One ASI ticket covers the Shore Temple and the Pancha Rathas for the same day. Arjuna's Penance, Krishna's Butter Ball and the cave temples are free. The lighthouse has its own small ticket.
