Road distance from Ernakulam Junction station to the Vagamon bus stand. The last 40 km after Thodupuzha is steep and winding, and mist can cut visibility in the afternoon, so allow up to 3.5 hours.
What to see in Vagamon
Meadows, pine forest and three pilgrim hills, a few kilometres apart. One day covers the town's sights.
Vagamon Meadows
Rolling hills of short grass at Kolahalamedu, the view most photos of Vagamon show. Open about 08:30 to 17:00, with a DTPC ticket. Go before the afternoon mist.
Vagamon Pine Forest
A planted forest of tall pines on a slope beside the meadows. Quietest in the early morning.
Kurisumala
The Christian hill of Vagamon's three pilgrim hills, a path past the 14 Stations of the Cross up to a small church at the top. Allow about an hour up and back on foot.
Thangal Para
The Muslim hill of the three, on the Elappara road, with a huge round boulder beside a Sufi saint's tomb on the hilltop. The last stretch is a walk up the grass.
Vagamon Lake
A small lake beside the town in tea country, with pedal boats and rowing boats from about 09:00 to 17:00. The easiest stop in Vagamon.
Illikkal Kallu
Three rock peaks on a ridge about 1,000 m up, west of Vagamon. On a clear day the view runs to the Arabian Sea. Go in the morning, before the afternoon clouds.

Through Thodupuzha and Pullikkanam

The quickest way. NH85 to Muvattupuzha, then the main road to Thodupuzha, and up through Kanjar and Pullikkanam. The climb is narrow and steep, so plan to arrive before dark.
Through Erattupetta
~103 km · about 3 h · via Erattupetta
South through the plains to Erattupetta, then up the ghat road to Vagamon. About the same distance; take it if the Thodupuzha road is slow.
