Road distance from Paltan Bazaar in Guwahati to central Shillong. From Guwahati airport it is 117 km. The jams are at Khanapara and Jorabat on the way out of Guwahati and at the edge of Shillong, so allow up to 4 hours.
What to see in Shillong
A view over the city, waterfalls and a museum in town, then Cherrapunji's falls and caves and the clear river at Dawki on day trips. Three days covers the best of it.
Shillong Peak
The highest point around the city, about 1,960 m, inside an Air Force station. Go when it opens at about 09:00, before the clouds roll in, and carry photo ID for the gate.
Elephant Falls
Three waterfalls one below the other in a fern-covered gorge, about 10 km from Police Bazar. Steps go down past all three; the bottom one is the best.
Don Bosco Museum
Seven floors on the peoples of the Northeast, their clothes, tools, music and homes, with a skywalk on the roof. Closed on Sundays.
Umiam Lake
A huge lake ringed by pine hills, 15 km before Shillong on the Guwahati road. Stop at the viewpoint on the way in; boats and water sports are about 1.5 km on.
Nohkalikai Falls, Cherrapunji
One of India's tallest plunge waterfalls, about 340 m, into a turquoise pool. It is the big sight of the Sohra day, with the Arwah and Mawsmai caves and Seven Sisters Falls.
Umngot river, Dawki
A river so clear from November to March that the boats seem to float on air, by the Bangladesh border. Pair it with Mawlynnong village and the Riwai root bridge.
The drive: which way to go
There is one road up. The only choice is how long to stop at Umiam Lake.
NH6 via Jorabat and Nongpoh

NH27 out of Guwahati to Jorabat on the Assam and Meghalaya border, then NH6 up through the hills. It is a wide four-lane road most of the way, with tea and snack stops at Nongpoh.

The viewpoint is right above the road, 15 km before Shillong: a quick stop for the view. For a boat ride or kayaking, go on about 1.5 km to the water sports complex by the lake.

Can I go on to Cherrapunji the same day?
Yes, if you land early. Sohra (Cherrapunji) is about 55 km past Shillong, another 1.5 to 2 hours. Many people stay a night there for the falls and caves.
Can a Guwahati cab take me sightseeing in Meghalaya?
Usually yes. Meghalaya has said cabs from other states cannot be stopped, but local taxi groups have at times blocked Assam cabs at tourist spots, most recently in August 2026. Ask the driver before you book, or hire a Meghalaya cab in Shillong for the day trips.
When is the best time to go?
October to April, for clear days and a clear river at Dawki. June to September is the monsoon: the waterfalls are at their biggest, but rain and fog slow the hill roads.
