Road distance from Bagdogra airport to the Clubside taxi stand below Chowrasta. Nearly all of it is steep hill road, and the last stretch shares space with the toy train line, so allow up to 3.5 hours.
What to see in Darjeeling
A sunrise viewpoint, the toy train loop, old monasteries, the zoo and the ropeway. One long day, starting before dawn, covers the main sights.
Tiger Hill
A hilltop 11 km from town where people watch sunrise turn Kanchenjunga pink and gold. Cabs need a coupon issued a day ahead, so book the cab the day before.
Batasia Loop
A spiral where the toy train loops round a garden, with the Gorkha war memorial in the middle and a view across to Kanchenjunga.
Ghoom Monastery
The oldest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the Darjeeling hills, from 1850, with a 15 foot statue of the Maitreya Buddha. Ask for Yiga Choeling.
Himalayan Zoo and Mountaineering Institute
Snow leopards and red pandas, and a museum of Everest climbs, on one ticket. Closed on Thursdays.
Darjeeling Ropeway
A slow cable car from Singamari down over the tea gardens to the Rangeet valley. It stops in heavy rain and fog, so check that morning.
Chowrasta and the Mall
The open square at the top of town and the old shopping street round the hill. No cars: it is a few minutes' walk from the Clubside taxi stand.
The drive: which way to go
Most cabs climb to Kurseong. The road through Mirik is longer but has a lake on the way.

A quieter road west through Mirik, a small town round a lake with tea gardens and pine woods. Stop for an hour by the lake, then climb on to Ghum and Darjeeling.

New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in Siliguri. A cab from there to Darjeeling takes about the same time as from Bagdogra airport.
