Caves

About 30 Buddhist caves cut into a horseshoe-shaped cliff above the Waghora river, made between about the 2nd century BC and the 5th century AD. They were forgotten for centuries until a British officer out hunting spotted them in 1819. The walls are covered in paintings of the Buddha's lives, princes, dancers and animals, the finest old paintings in India. Caves 1, 2, 16 and 17 have the best of them; caves 19 and 26 are carved prayer halls.

Caves

34 caves along 2 km of cliff, made by Buddhists, Hindus and Jains between about the 6th and 10th centuries. The star is cave 16, the Kailasa temple: a whole temple, with elephants, towers and bridges, carved downwards from a single rock. Caves 10 (a Buddhist prayer hall with a ribbed ceiling) and the Jain caves 32 to 34 at the north end are worth the walk.

A fort on a cone-shaped hill, once called Devagiri, about 15 km from the city on the Ellora road. In 1327 Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq moved his whole capital here from Delhi, then moved it back. Inside the walls are the 60 m Chand Minar tower and the Chini Mahal, and the path to the top goes through a pitch-dark, twisting tunnel built to confuse attackers.

Forts & monuments

A white tomb in a walled Mughal garden, built in the 1660s by Aurangzeb's son Azam Shah for his mother, Dilras Banu Begum. It was modelled on the Taj Mahal, so it is often called the Taj of the Deccan, but it is smaller and only the lower part is marble; the rest is plaster.

Caves

Twelve Buddhist caves cut into the hill behind Bibi Ka Maqbara, from about the 6th and 7th centuries, in two groups about 1.5 km apart. Cave 7 has some of the finest carvings of women in Indian art, including dancers and musicians beside the Buddha. Far fewer people come here than to Ellora.

A 17th-century water mill beside the shrine of the Sufi saint Baba Shah Musafir. Water was brought by an underground clay pipe from a spring about 6 km away and dropped in a small waterfall to turn a millstone that ground grain for pilgrims. The big tank with fish and the old banyan tree make it a pleasant short stop.

Questions people ask

Where are the Ajanta and Ellora Caves?

Both are in Maharashtra, near Aurangabad, now officially called Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The Ellora Caves are about 30 km northwest of the city, at Verul. The Ajanta Caves are about 104 km north, near Fardapur, in a gorge of the Waghora river. They are about 100 km apart.

How many days do you need for Aurangabad?

Two days covers the main sights: one day for Ellora with Grishneshwar, Daulatabad Fort and Bibi Ka Maqbara, and one for Ajanta. With three days you also see the Aurangabad Caves, Soneri Mahal and Panchakki.

On which days are Ajanta and Ellora closed?

The Ajanta Caves are closed on Mondays and the Ellora Caves on Tuesdays. Plan the days round that: Ellora on Monday and Ajanta on Tuesday works well.

What are the Ajanta and Ellora timings and ticket prices?

Ajanta is open 09:00 to 17:00. Listings give Ellora as 06:00 to 18:00 or 09:00 to 17:30, so arrive after 09:00 and leave by 17:30 to be safe. Each costs ₹40 for Indians and ₹600 for foreigners, and children under 15 go free. At Ajanta, add about ₹25 to ₹30 each way for the bus from the T-point.

Can a cab drive up to the Ajanta Caves?

No. Private cars and taxis stop at the T-point visitor centre near Fardapur. Electric buses run the last 4 km to the caves and back; buy the bus ticket at the T-point. The T-point has parking, food stalls and a restaurant.

Is the Ajanta day too long for a city cab package?

Yes. A city cab day is usually 8 hours and 80 km, and the Ajanta day is about 208 km and 10 to 11 hours. Book it as a full-day outstation trip and agree the price for the km with the operator before you set off.

What is the best time to visit Ajanta and Ellora?

October to March, when days are about 25 to 30 °C. April and May go near 40 °C, and the stone paths get very hot. In the monsoon (July to September) the hills turn green and waterfalls run at Ajanta and over the Ellora caves, but paths can be slippery.

Can you visit Aurangzeb's tomb at Khuldabad?

It is a plain open-air grave in a dargah courtyard in Khuldabad, 4 km before Ellora. Since March 2025 police and the Archaeological Survey of India have kept guards there and screened or restricted entry. Ask locally before you go; it is not in these plans.

Are Paithan and Lonar worth a day trip from Aurangabad?

Paithan, about 55 km south, is the home of Paithani silk saris, with weaving centres, the Dnyaneshwar Udyan garden and the Jayakwadi dam: a half day of about 110 km. The Lonar crater lake is 140 to 165 km each way, so it is better as an overnight trip.

Where should I stay for Ajanta and Ellora?

Aurangabad is the easiest base, with the most hotels and the airport and railway station. You can also stay near Ellora (Verul) for an early start there, or at the MTDC resort in Fardapur, 4 km from the Ajanta T-point, to reach Ajanta at opening time.
