Questions people ask

How many days do you need for Ahmedabad?

Two days covers the city and Gandhinagar: one for the old city, the Sabarmati Ashram and Kankaria, one for Sarkhej Roza, Adalaj and Akshardham. Add a third for Modhera and Rani ki Vav.

What are the Sabarmati Ashram timings?

10:00 to 18:00 every day, and entry is free. While conservation work goes on, Hriday Kunj, Gandhi's cottage, can be seen only from outside; the museum stays open.

Which places are closed on Mondays?

Kankaria Lake, Akshardham, Dandi Kutir, Science City, the Calico Museum and the riverfront Flower Park. The old city, the Sabarmati Ashram, Adalaj, Modhera and Rani ki Vav are open.

Can I visit the mosques on a Friday?

Yes, in the morning. Avoid prayer times, above all Friday midday, when the Jama Masjid and Sidi Saiyyed fill up. Women may not go into the prayer halls or Ahmed Shah's tomb.

What is the Ahmedabad heritage walk?

A 2 km walk through the old city run by the city corporation. It starts at the Swaminarayan Temple in Kalupur at 07:45 (report by 07:30) and ends at the Jama Masjid, and costs ₹200. A night walk starts at the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque at 20:45. Book online or on 1800 233 9008.

How do I visit the Calico Museum?

Only on a guided tour: 10:30 or 14:30, Tuesday to Sunday. It is free, but you must register online first and there are 20 places a tour. Children under 10 are not let in, and phones and bags stay at the gate.

Can I go up the shaking minarets?

No. Climbing Jhulta Minar has not been allowed since 1981, so you see it from below. It is opposite the railway station.

Is the Statue of Unity a day trip from Ahmedabad?

It is about 200 km each way, over 400 km there and back, so it is too far for a day out. Stay a night at Kevadia instead.

Is Lothal worth a day trip?

If you like history, yes: it is a Harappan port town about 80 km south-west, about 160 km there and back. Its museum is closed on Fridays. It is not in these plans.

Where can I eat and shop in the evening?

Manek Chowk in the old city becomes a night food street from about 21:00. Law Garden has stalls of mirror-work bags and embroidery from about dusk. Kankaria Lake is busy with families until 22:00.

When is the best time to visit Ahmedabad?

November to February, when days are about 28 to 30 °C. April to June often passes 40 °C, so see the sights before noon. During Navratri and Uttarayan, the kite festival on 14 January, the city is busy and hotels fill up.
