Questions people ask

How many days do you need for Mumbai?

Two days for the city: one for south Mumbai round the Gateway of India, the museums and Malabar Hill, and one for Haji Ali, Siddhivinayak, Bandra and Juhu. Add a third day for the Elephanta Caves, an hour by ferry across the harbour.

What are the Elephanta Caves timings?

The caves are open 09:00 to 17:30 and closed on Mondays, when the ferries stop too. Ferries leave the Gateway of India from 09:00, about every half hour. The last boat out is at about 14:00 (some sources say later) and the last one back at about 17:30. The return ferry is about ₹200 to ₹260, cash, and cave tickets are about ₹40 for Indians and ₹600 for foreigners.

Which Mumbai sights are closed on some days?

The Elephanta Caves and Sanjay Gandhi National Park close on Mondays. The Bhau Daji Lad Museum and the Byculla zoo close on Wednesdays. Most of Crawford Market is shut on Sundays. ISKCON Juhu closes from 13:00 to 16:00, and Mount Mary from 13:00 to 14:00 on Monday to Saturday. The CSMVS museum, Mani Bhavan and the big temples open every day.

What are the Siddhivinayak Temple timings?

05:30 to 21:50, with a short pause from about 12:05 to 12:30. On Tuesdays, Ganesh's day, it opens at 03:15 and stays open to 23:30, and the queues run for 2 to 4 hours, so pick another day if you can.

When can I walk to Haji Ali?

When the tide is low. The causeway is about 500 m long and the sea washes over it at high tide, so check a Mumbai tide table for the day. The dargah is open 05:30 to 22:00, and women may enter the inner shrine.

Can I see the Kanheri Caves or the Global Pagoda?

Both are in the far north of the city, so they are not in the day plans. The Kanheri Caves are inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park, about 46 km from Marine Drive; the park is closed on Mondays, and an e-bus runs from the gate to the caves. The Global Vipassana Pagoda at Gorai is free, open 09:00 to 19:00, and about 1.5 to 2 hours by road from south Mumbai. Make either one its own half day.

Can I visit Dharavi?

Yes, on a guided walking tour of about 2.5 hours, which meets at a railway station. Photos are not allowed on most tours. It is not a cab stop, so book the tour on its own.

Is there a toll for an outside cab coming into Mumbai?

Not for cars at the five city entry points: those tolls were dropped for light vehicles in October 2024. The Bandra–Worli Sea Link costs about ₹100 one way, and the Atal Setu to Navi Mumbai has its own toll. The Coastal Road is free.
