What to see in Alleppey

The backwaters by boat first, then the beach, a museum and the temples and paddy fields of Kuttanad. One day covers the main sights.

A shikara ride into the backwaters

A small canopied boat from the Finishing Point on Punnamada Lake into the narrow canals, past paddy fields below the water line and village homes. Boats run from early morning to about 17:30.

Alappuzha Beach

The town beach, with the iron posts of a pier more than 150 years old running into the sea. Best late afternoon into sunset. The sea is rough here; do not swim.

Revi Karunakaran Museum

One of India's largest private museums, with ivory carvings, crystal, porcelain and old Kerala furniture. Open 09:00 to 17:00; closed on Mondays.

Ambalapuzha Sree Krishna Temple

A Krishna temple about 15 km south of town, right off NH66 on the drive in, famous for its palpayasam, a sweet rice and milk pudding. Open about 03:00 to 12:00 and 17:00 to 20:00; only Hindus may enter.

Marari Beach

A quiet, wide beach in a fishing village about 15 km north of town, lined with coconut palms. Fishing boats come in on the sand in the morning.

St Mary's Basilica, Champakulam

One of Kerala's oldest churches, on the Pamba river in the middle of Kuttanad. The road there runs on embankments between paddy fields.

The drive: which way to go

The coast highway is shorter. The inland way crosses the paddy fields of Kuttanad at the end.

Usual

NH66 through Kollam

~152 km · about 3.5 h · via Kollam, Kayamkulam & Ambalapuzha

The main highway up the coast, and the way most cabs go. It passes Ambalapuzha, so you can stop at the temple about 15 km before Alleppey. Pick this if you have a houseboat check-in, usually around noon.

Inland

MC Road and the AC Road

~161 km · about 3.5 h · via Kottarakkara, Adoor & Changanassery

About 9 km longer. MC Road runs inland to Changanassery, then the AC Road heads west across the paddy fields of Kuttanad into Alleppey, with water on both sides.

About 152 km and 3.5 hours on NH66. Allow up to 4.5 hours when the towns on the way are busy.

Yes. The airport is about 6 km west of the station, so the ride to Alleppey is about the same distance.

Day trip or overnight?

Overnight is better. About 7 hours of driving there and back leaves little time on the water, so most people book a one-way drop and stay a night on a houseboat.

Yes. Alappuzha station is on the coast line through Kollam and Kayamkulam. A cab is easier if you are going straight to a houseboat jetty or a resort outside town.

When is the best time to go?

September to March, when it is dry and pleasant. The monsoon from June to August is green but wet, and the Nehru Trophy snake-boat race is in August.
