Road distance from Coimbatore Junction to Ooty town via Mettupalayam and Coonoor. The 52 km ghat from Mettupalayam is the slow part, with hairpin bends. Allow up to 3.5 hours.
What to see in Ooty
Tea gardens and a viewpoint at Coonoor on the way up, then gardens, a lake and the highest peak in the Nilgiris. Two days covers the main sights.
Dolphin's Nose
A flat rock jutting out over the valley about 10 km past Coonoor, facing Catherine Falls. Coonoor is on the ghat road up, so it fits on the way in or as a second day.
Doddabetta Peak
At 2,637 m the highest point in the Nilgiris, about 9 km from town, with a telescope house at the top. Go first thing: mist often hides the view by late morning.
Government Botanical Garden
Terraced lawns laid out in 1848, a glasshouse of ferns and orchids, and a fossil tree trunk. The summer flower show is held here every May.
Ooty Lake boat ride
A lake built in 1824, edged with eucalyptus, with pedal, row and motor boats from the boat house. Weekend queues are long; weekday afternoons are quieter.
Pine Forest
A slope of tall, straight pines on the Pykara road west of town, often used as a film location. The paths down between the trunks get slippery after rain.
Pykara Lake and Falls
A forest reservoir with speed and row boats, about 20 km west of Ooty, with a run of cascades about 2 km away. Pair it with the Pine Forest on the same road.
The drive: which way to go
There are two ghat roads up from Mettupalayam. The Coonoor road is shorter; the Kotagiri road is quieter.
Mettupalayam and Coonoor ghat

Flat to Mettupalayam, then NH181 climbs the hairpins alongside the toy train line to Coonoor and on to Ooty. Busy on season weekends.
Kotagiri road
~101 km · about 3 h · via Mettupalayam & Kotagiri
Turns off at Mettupalayam and climbs a gentler ghat through tea estates to Kotagiri, then across to Ooty. A little longer, with less traffic.

Can the cab pick me up at Coimbatore airport?
Yes. The airport at Peelamedu is east of the city, so the ride to Ooty is a little longer than from Coimbatore Junction.
Is there a train to Ooty?
Yes, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a toy train from Mettupalayam through Coonoor to Ooty and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Seats fill up early, so book ahead. Many people take it one way and the cab the other.
When is the best time to go?
March to June is the main season, with the flower show in May and the busiest roads. October to February is quieter and colder. In the monsoon, rain and landslips can slow or close the ghat roads.
