Road distance from Kozhikode railway station to Ernakulam Junction station. There are no hills, but the road runs through a string of towns, so allow up to 5.5 hours.
What to see in Kochi
The old town is across the water from Ernakulam. Two days covers Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and the Hill Palace.
Mattancherry Palace
A palace built for the Raja of Kochi around 1555, later repaired by the Dutch, with some of the finest temple murals in Kerala. Open 10:00 to 17:00; closed on Fridays.
Paradesi Synagogue
Built in 1568, with a floor of hand-painted blue and white Chinese tiles. Open 10:00 to 12:00 and 15:00 to 17:00; closed on Fridays and Saturdays.
St Francis Church
Built by the Portuguese in 1503, one of the oldest European churches in India. Vasco da Gama was first buried here, and his gravestone is still in the floor.
Chinese Fishing Nets
Huge nets on teak frames along the Fort Kochi shore, lifted by fishermen pulling on ropes and stone weights. They are worked in the morning and late afternoon.
Marine Drive
A long walkway along the Ernakulam backwater. Harbour boat rides of about an hour leave from the jetty in the evening; agree the price before you board.
Hill Palace Museum
The old palace of the Kochi royal family in Tripunithura, now Kerala's largest archaeological museum, with a deer park in the grounds. Closed on Mondays.
The drive: which way to go
The coast road is the usual way. An inland road through Thrissur suits a pickup or drop at Kochi airport.
NH66 down the coast

The direct road south. Guruvayur temple is a short turn off at Chavakkad, adding only about 7 km, so it is an easy stop on the way.
Inland through Thrissur and NH544
~217 km · about 5.5 h · via Thrissur, Angamaly & Kochi airport
Turn inland to Thrissur, then south on NH544 past Kochi airport. Pick it if you are flying out of Kochi: the airport is about 175 km from Calicut this way, before the city traffic.
